I have lived next to a golf course for as long as I can remember but did not pick the sport up until I was 15 years old. No one in my family had played until my dad decided to try it when I was 11. He would always ask me if I wanted to try it. I was reluctant at first because I thought it would be boring. I turned out to be very wrong. When I finally decided to pick up a club and hit a ball something in me clicked. I found so much joy in hearing the club strike the ball and watching the ball fly far. After that experience, I begged my parents for a set of clubs so I could learn more about the sport I would grow to love.
Over the summer between my freshman and sophomore year, I took several lessons from one of the pros at my home course. I then decided to join my high school team that next spring. When the season rolled around, I had never played more than 9 holes of golf and had definitely never been in a tournament before. At our first tournament of the season, it was the first time I ever played 18 holes. I played on the varsity team and shot a 110, which would turn out to be my best score that season. My scoring average that first season would be 122, not great, but a beginning. As summer arrived I went to work. I got a new coach, Shea Sena, who told me that I had natural talent and with hard work, I could do a lot with golf. I practiced whenever I could and started to learn more about the game. I worked all through the winter in an indoor golf simulator. I also went to Phoenix several times to play. When the 2018 season started I was ready and earned the varsity one slot on the team. At our first tournament, I shot a 90, 20 less than my very first tournament only one year earlier. I went on to place 7th at our regionals with an 88 and 39th at state with the lowest score for my team. In addition to playing top varsity, I was co-captain with one of my closest friends.
Over the course of the last two years I found a sport that I love, a team I think of as family and most importantly learned how hard work and determination can help you reach your dreams and defy the odds.
