Please allow me to tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Sydney and I am a golfer.
While I may not have been playing golf as long as some, I have been Blessed with athleticism and a highly driven competitive nature. Any sport I play...I play to win. I think I get some of that competitive spirit from my older brother who was a four-year scholarship athlete in college himself. I guess you could say that fierce competition is in my DNA.
My Coaches would describe me as the golfer they have to make leave the range 20 minutes after the lights have been turned off because they want to go home. I am never satisfied with my game. No matter how well I am playing, I know I can play better. I hate losing more than I like winning so I promise you I am not the type of player that has to be told to hit the range or putting green. I actually talked my home course into hiring me part-time so I can "slip" in putting and chipping during my lunch breaks. I LOVE this game.
I also consider myself a team player. While I have been Blessed with being named to First Team Western Conference (twice) as well as my high schools golf team MVP, winning our first high school District Championship in a decade has to date, been my highlight. I missed going to the Florida State High School Championships my Junior year by one stroke. That will not happen again this year.
My dream has been to play golf in College. I want to play against the best golfers in College. I want to win a College Championship. I want to be the type of teammate that a College or University team would deserve. My Golf Coach believes that I would be a highly competitive golfer in College. I take her at her word. She played for a major D1 program when she was in college. She is a well known and highly respected former LPGA player who is the President of the LPGA Players Association. Her support, coaching and belief in me has been nothing short of inspirational.
I am a good student who scored well above 1100 on my first SAT I recently took. Needless to say, I am not satisfied with that score and plan on retaking the test. While I am not 100% certain what my career goals will be yet, I am heavily leaning towards Elementary Education. As an active member of my Church, I counsel young girls and volunteer in similar capacities in my community. I also assist my Golf Coach during her summer Golf Camps for beginning and intermediary young golfers. I enjoy these activities and think I am good at them. With family members and close friends who are teachers, I think this may be the right career choice for me.
While I am not ruling out a mega-university, I believe I may be better suited for a smaller or medium sized college or university with regards to student population. I am also not ruling out schools in northern States yet I think I would prefer to attend college in geographical areas that would allow me to play golf year-round. Again, at this point I am open to most options and am certain that the impressions I have of the Coaching Staff will be my deciding factor in choosing a school.
I know every athlete likes to develop deep friendships based on integrity and trust with their Coaches. I am no exception. My High School Coach is the perfect example of just such a person. He has made a tremendous impact on my life in the short time I have known him. However, he is also someone that can be very direct and tough when he needs to be. I have found that I actually respond to that type of interaction and respect the fact that he treats me like an athlete in that regards. It is my hope that I can find a Coach in College that exhibits all of the aforementioned traits so I can continue to grow as both a player and person.
I love the outdoors, working with kids, my family and most of all I love the game of golf. I have friends who are playing golf in College and I see the great joy they get from continuing to play a sport they too love. To play at the next level is my goal as well. I will achieve that goal. I hope it is with you at your school.
Sincerely,
Sydney Buck
