I am seeking a position on a college golf team. I started to play golf the summer before my junior year in high school. I understand this makes me a "late" starter, however, my father worked with me as did a golf professional, to create a sound golf swing. I have more work to do, but feel the basic mechanics are in place. I adhere to a "connected" swing approach and find it works best for me. During my junior year, I gradually improved and began scoring better as my short game improved. I climbed through the ranks and made the varsity team and contributed to the in that position from mid-season on. My scoring seemed to be up and down and largely depended upon how effective my chipping and putting went that round. My scores on 9 holes ranged from a 49 to 56. Inspection of my rounds showed that with minor improvements in short game, I could be in the mid 40's or better within a year.
I am a team player, get along with coaches and players, and work very hard at whatever I do. I have played and practiced piano since the age of five, held leading roles in our high school plays in acting and singing, am in the top ten of my high school class, am president of our student Christian association, and routinely work in volunteer capacities. Most recently I worked with a student who participated in the special olympics and regard that experience as one of the most rewarding ones ever. I believe playing college golf will help me grow as a person and look forward to the opportunity.
I plan to major in English, focus on writing, and complete a complement of biology, chemistry, and physics courses to prepare for application to medical school. I regard playing college sports as an opportunity to expand my experience, learn teamwork, and grow in the mental discipline of golf. Someday I may work with high school or college level golfers. Playing in college will help open this door.
Thank you,
Sarah Morthland
