This game called golf. It can be maddening. It can be peaceful. It can be intimidating. It can be fulfilling. All the reasons to love the game and all the reasons to despise the game. In 18 holes you can really learn a lot about yourself, your determination, your strengths and your weaknesses playing this sport.
I have played competitively for approximately 3 years and simply played recreationally with family prior to that. My first competitive play started my Freshman year while playing for Glendale High School. I quickly learned that the peace and relaxation of being on the course can easily be forgotten from the mental frustration that comes with a bad drive, a lost ball, a stubborn bunker and of course the just barely short putt that doesn’t make it in the hole. Being mentally strong is easier said than done sometimes. I have learned that golf often requires a short term memory. Meaning, forget the last hole if it brought you frustration and personal defeat and the next hole can bring exhilaration and personal success.
As I’m entering my Junior year of high school golf I have become more dedicated to perfecting my game and wanting more out of it. I have grown to be a stronger player mentally; not focusing on the negative and building on the positives of my game. With that growth it has allowed my mind and heart to enjoy the game more than ever.
I hope to continue my golf journey into my college years and all the years following in my future.
