Personal Statement

Freshman Year:

I started playing golf when I was seven years old and fell in love with the game. I am a freshman at Frenchtown High School. in 2021, I won 1st place in the Missoula Youth Summer Tour,  won 1st place at the Western Montana Junior Championship qualifier with a score of 77, placed fifth in the 14-15 year old Montana Junior Championship with a score of 179,  won the Ranch Club Ladies Championship with a two day score of 158, won the local qualifier for Driver, Chip & Putt,  was 2nd in the sub-regional Drive, Chip & Putt and finished in 5th place at the Pebble Beach Drive, Chip &  Putt  regional competition and tied for 1st in chipping.  This was my first year of high school golf and I won 8 tournaments, with a low round of 74 at the Libby invitational, and was 2nd place in four tournaments. I was second place at State Divisional's with a score of 81. I placed 3rd place at the class A state tournament with a score of 157.  I look forward to improving my game in this off-season. I will be concentrating on putting.  I am a 3.96 student and I am taking several advance placement courses in high school.

Sophomore Year:

I worked hard over the winter on my swing and putting. The highlight of my season was capturing the Montana Class A State Championship. I had an undefeated season with 11 straight tournament wins. I was the first golfer from Frenchtown High School to ever win the state title and led my team to a 3rd place finish at the state championship tournament. Other highlights of the season included qualifying for, and playing in, the Callaway World Junior Championship in Palm Desert. Although I did not make the cut, I finished with a two day total of 154 and was close to the cut line. This was my first major tournament and I learned much about my course management and mental game. I won the Missoula Junior Championship, the Ranch Club Championship, the PGA Western Montana Pro/Junior Tournament (with a career low 69), the PGA Rocky Mountain Sectional Junior Championship and the FCG Montana Old Works Championship which was a qualifier for the Callaway FCG World Junior Championship in July of 2023. I was also invited to participate in the PGA National High School Championship being held in Frisco, TX in July of 2023. I participated in a Next Level golf camp in Las Vegas Nevada that was attended by 29 Division I coaches In December. My 18 hole scoring average my freshman year was 80.2 and my sophomore 18 hole scoring average was 76.4.  I plan to continue to work on my swing with the goal of being a scratch golfer in tournaments in my junior year. My current handicap is 1.5.

Junior Year:

Started summer golf season with 2nd place finish at FCG Montana Championship In May. In June won the Montana Golf Association Junior Championship with -2 (141) score. Recorded 10 birdies in two-day tournament. Chosen to represent state of Montana in Girl’s Americas Cup in July and Montana/Alberta Cup in August. Preparing for busy July of PGA National High School Championship in Frisco Texas, FCG Callaway World Championship in Palm Desert, CA and Girl’s Americas Cup in Oliver, BC.

placed 42nd out of 196 participants at PGA National High School Championship with 3 day total of 238. highlight of the tourney was starting with a quad bogey on Day three and going -1 the remaining 17 holes to score a 75.

placed 60th at FCG Callaway world championship with two day score of 156. Highlight of the tourny was sinking a 122 yard shot for eagle on a par 4.

placed 28th at Girls Junior Americas Cup with two day total of 237.

in my high school season, I won ten tournaments, and won the Montana Class A State Championship with a two day score of 148. I was four strokes behind heading into the second day and scored a 69 in 20 MPH winds to win the tournament by 12 strokes.

  • 1st place finish with two day total 148 (79-69). Day one was tough and I scrambled my way to a 79 and was 4 strokes down to the leader. I went to the range that night and got dialed in. Day two was tough conditions with 20 MPH winds, but I would not let that hold me back from winning back to back state championships. I went off on the back 9 and finished the tourney by birdieing three of the last four holes to shot a 69; the low round of the tourney, boys or girls. I was down by 4 strokes after day one and ended up winning by 12. In my final round I hit 86% of fairways, 65% of greens and my putting stroke average was 1.5. I had seven birdies in the final round.

  • FRENCHTOWN — Even in sixth grade, Tim Yaeger knew he had a special sort of athlete in his math class. "We would always talk golf," the Frenchtown golf coach said of his prized player, Katie Lewis, who will shoot for her second straight State A title on Friday and Saturday in Sidney. "She's definitely a well-known name here at school because not only is she a great golfer, she's a great kid, too. Good in the classroom, played basketball. Pretty well known in these hallways." Well known in northwest Missoula County, period. Lewis is a fixture at The Ranch Club in the summertime, working there and playing pretty much every day of the week. That's the not-so-secret formula for her success. "Some days I'll play two balls and compete against myself," she told 406mtsports.com. "Then usually after Dad (Jim) is off work, we'll got out and like I'll give him a stroke every hole and we'll compete to see who does the best. "It's fun to have that competitiveness. My Dad and I played a lot this summer. We're usually out there like six out of the seven days of the week. Most of the time it will be 18." Lewis' consistency separates her from other state golf champions around the state. The junior has won 19 of 20 high school tournaments dating back to her undefeated 2022 sophomore campaign. She has won 28 of 33 in her high school career and fired a 69 in Whitefish earlier this season. The 16-year-old Lewis posted her eighth win of 2023 at divisionals last week in Whitefish. Knowing what everyone from weekend hackers to Tiger Woods know about the cruelty of golf, Lewis' success almost defies logic. Then making it even more impressive is the fact she's winning with a torn shoulder (labrum) suffered last winter during basketball season. "The main thing about golf is keeping under control and realizing you could do something different every hole," Lewis said. "I could start out bad and then know I could come back with a birdie, birdie, birdie and make it all better. "With the bad days, I always take it one shot at a time and I realize, 'OK, we're going to work with what I have today.'" Lewis credits her father with getting her started in golf. Her family moved to rural Missoula when she was 6 years old and she and her dad learned the Game of Kings together. By the time she was in sixth grade, she was eager to talk golf with anyone willing to take the time. "I remember (Yeager) always would ask what I was shooting when I was in his math class and I would tell him and he'd be like, 'Man, that's pretty good. That's better than I am right now!'' Lewis said with a smile. "We'd just go back and forth." Yaeger took over as varsity golf coach when Lewis was a freshman. "We've been working together ever since," the coach said. "It's been a good journey and fun to watch her grow. She's a pretty amazing kid. "I knew pretty early on she was the real deal. Then the first time I saw her swing a golf club, you can tell it's a little different than some things you can see around the state." Yaeger has always been impressed with Lewis' work ethic. Even in the cold winter months, she is striving to improve, playing PGA Junior Tour events and attending camps. Lewis never takes her success for granted or leans too hard on her exceptional distance off the tee. "Her recognizing her game and what she needs to improve on is one of her strengths," Yaeger said. "After her freshman year when she got third (at state), it was putting she knew she needed to get better at. She worked on that all summer going into her sophomore year. She sets goals for herself." Repeating as State A champion will not be easy for Lewis, who became the first golfer in Frenchtown High School history to medal at state last fall in Hamilton. She and her teammates set out on Tuesday afternoon on a long journey that will end at the Sidney Country Club, 615 miles away. "It's been tough for me to even find people that have played on that private course, so we don't have a lot of knowledge about it," Yaeger said. "We've done some aerial views and dialed in some distances. "A little bit of a unique challenge there but certainly that's not going to be an excuse." Lewis and the Broncs will have a practice round on Thursday. The defending State A girls champion will formulate a game plan and stick to it. In the end, the goal for Lewis is to keep improving and someday play on a college team. She has been encouraged by the strides she has made this season, but she's never satisfied. "I just feel like you can never get perfect at golf," she said. "You can't get too fixated on one thing. There's always room for improvement." Bill Speltz is Missoulian Sports Editor.
