My name is Adamma Anukwuem. I am a junior at South Iredell High School. I have participated in many extracurricular activities like competitive dancing, karate, soccer, etc., but golf is my favorite. I took up golf after middle school because I had a strong desire to make my high school’s golf team. I worked so hard on the range and on the course for several months leading up to my freshman year. Following lots of practices and tryouts with the team, I was 1 of 5 players picked for the Girls’ Varsity Golf team. I felt rewarded because it proved to me that hard work pays.
In my first official 2019-2020 season with the team, we won our first ever girl’s golf conference championship; I shot my lowest 9 hole score of 36 to post a school record; I was named 4 time player of the match. I was named girl’s golfer of the week by The Charlotte Observer 2019 and received the coaches award for season. I made the All-Conference, all-county, Regionals, and State championships in the 3A central division. In my second official 2020-2021 season with the team, we won our second girl's golf conference championship. I also made the All-Conference and Regionals in the 3A central division. If I could achieve all of this in this short time by being passionate and committed, I feel that working even harder will open more doors of opportunities in golf.
I challenge myself everyday to be a better me and a better golfer. I have played a few tournaments after my first official season in school. I am currently registered with PKBGT, TYGA, CGA, and HJGT in order to continue to challenge myself.
I have both short and long term goals. My short term goals are to continue to help my high school golf team win conference championships; to shoot lower than my current average 9 and 18 hole scores; to consistently shoot in the 80s in the next few months, and upper 70s by my senior season, and I also want to make regionals and states the next 2 seasons. My long term goals are to break 80 and 70 consistently; to play golf in college with even more dedication and passion. I understand it will take a lot of hard work on my part. My current achievements are a testament to what you can do if you are steadfast, dedicated and passionate. Other than golf, I would like to go to medical school and become a dermatologist.
I am reading books to improve my mindset and mental game as I have struggled at times with negative emotions on the golf course. I am an African American female golfer and would love to bring more diversity to the game and in fact inspire more people like me to pick up the sport.
Golf is a life parallel and I am learning a lot and am extremely excited to be playing this game. I am coachable, patient, and conscientious. I am doing everything I can to be a confident golfer, in turn help my team win tournaments. I understand the imperfection that comes with golf and life. I am looking forward to these challenges.
