Not everyone gets to say they were given a second chance at life. The year I turned 12, my world turned upside down. I found out I was in stage four chronic kidney failure and needed an immediate transplant. I was given the gift of life and opportunity to continue the game I love, golf. Since I first swung a club at the age of eight, golf gave me focus, taught me patience, and encouraged me to work through difficulties.
I played competitive golf at 14. When I walk onto the golf course, I feel at home. I spend countless hours practicing my swing, chip shots, and putting. I live and breath golf. As a child, I dreamed of playing golf at the collegiate level. It would be an honor and privilege to play the game I love while going to college. Playing collegiate golf is a once in a lifetime opportunity that will change my life. I want to meet other women golfers who share the same dream and work with them to better myself and the team. I am interested in earning a degree where I work with people, such as Public Relations.
I would be a great candidate for your team. I am a leader in my high school as well as within the community. I was elected the team captain of my high school’s Varsity Golf team and consider it an honor to work with my teammates and bring out the best in each of us. I am hard working, determined, easy to work with, dependable, organized, cooperative, open with my communication, have a positive attitude, goal-oriented, and most of all, I am passionate about this game. In school, I work hard and strive to do my best. I am well-rounded, holding down two part-time jobs at a restaurant and grocery store. I auditioned and was selected for two performing arts high school choirs: Symphonic and Women's Choruses. I am in the Book Club, lettered during my first year with the Bowling Team, and participate in the Environmental Club. I am a published author in scholarly books about addressing social justice issues and exhibited my art at seven leading for social justice exhibitions. I also auditioned for an award-winning regional chorus and accepted their invitation to join. This year, I also auditioned for an extremely competitive theater production with the All-City Musical’s production of West Side Story. I was honored to be selected for a main role. I also served my community by walking rescued dogs and organized neighborhood food drives for the local food shelters in my city.
I want to attend a college where I can succeed on the golf course and in the classroom. I am open to any opportunities. I hope to be a role model for all young women, especially Brown and Black girls or kids with chronic health conditions. I want to show them that we have it within us to make it. We just need to develop our talents and use those life lessons to get through tough times, and that together, we CAN overcome and we WILL succeed!
I look forward to being a member of your team and golf family.
