Personal Statement

Hello! My name is Madison Koshko. I am a sophomore at Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy in Boalsburg, PA. I golf 6 days a week, 2-6 hours a day. On my days off, I am doing drills to keep my game sharp, working out to stay fit, and just hanging out with my friends. During the 2023 high school golf season, I was the district 6 champion, shooting a 71 (-1) at Windber Country Club. At the PIAA 2A State Golf Tournament, I placed 5th overall at Penn State University Blue Course. I play in lots of tournaments throughout the year, especially events by the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour. I am very optimistic and I am trying to be more extroverted and outgoing. I am dedicated and hardworking, both on and off the golf course. I have a 4.08 cumulative GPA, while taking all honors and 1 AP class. I plan to study medicine in college, and my dream job would be a radiologist or a clinical pathologist. I love helping and communicating with people, and I want a job that allows me to do that. Before high school, I had always played by myself as an individual. Once I got to high school, I had to adjust to the team aspect, which I found very inclusive and enjoyable, even though I play on the boys team. Being part of a team has made me realize how excited I am to play on a college team.

Events

  • Camp/Event
  • Junior PGA Championship
  • 7/30/24 to 8/02/24
  • I shot 73,76,75 (+9) and finished 44th out of 156 (6297 yards). The courses at Congressional CC are very challenging, and I feel like I played pretty well. The first day I made some good birdies, and my driving and approach shots were good. The second day I struggled off the tee and on the greens. The last day I had a strong front nine, but on the back I struggled with some tight pin positions. Overall it was a great experience playing in my first junior major, even though at some times it was a little frustrating. I learned that I am able to hold my own against the top girls.
  • Camp/Event
  • AJGA UHY St. Louis Junior
  • 7/15/24 to 7/18/24
  • I finished T7 and shot 73,73,75 (+8, par 71). The golf course I played this week was very hilly and challenging, with small greens and not much room to error off the tee. The first 2 days were pretty good, where I made some good birdies and up and downs. The third day was hard because I was struggling with my approach shots, but I was still able to make 60% of my up and downs.
  • Camp/Event
  • AJGA Renewal by Anderson Junior Open Hosted by D.A. Points
  • 7/08/24 to 7/11/24
  • I shot 71,76,71 (+2), and finished in 6th place. The first day I was hitting my approach shots really well, which allowed me to make a lot of pars and a few birdies. The second day was rough for me because of all the rain delays, and it was hard for me to adjust to the changing schedule. It just messed with my routine and tempo going into the round. I came back with a second under par round the last day, where I was able to make some good birdies and up and downs.
  • Camp/Event
  • LPGA USGA Girls Golf National Championship
  • 6/25/24 to 6/27/24
  • I shot 73,73,70 (E), and finished T3 (6050 yards). My approach shots and putting were definitely my strong suit this week. I was able to hit a lot of greens and make birdie putts. I also had some clutch par saves throughout the week, especially on the last day.
  • Camp/Event
  • AJGA The Memorial Tournament
  • 6/04/24 to 6/06/24
  • This was my first AJGA of the year and I was able to finish in 7th place. I shot 73,70,75 (+11, par 69). The second day I missed a lot of greens but I was able to make up and down on most holes. The third day was very frustrating because a lot of my putts were lipping out. My score was fine until I reached 16, and I made a triple. On that hole, I began thinking about future shots and getting ahead of myself. I wasn’t giving the current shot enough attention. Overall, this tournament was a good learning experience. I learned that I have to be present for every shot and that staying calm is crucial.
  • Camp/Event
  • PKB Open Championship
  • 5/25/24 to 5/27/24
  • This tournament was a 3 day event with a cut after 2, playing from 6200 yards. I made the cut and shot 74, 76, 75 (+9) which got me a 19th place finish. The course played a little long for me, but I was able to make a lot of up and downs.
  • Camp/Event
  • Philadelphia PGA Junior
  • 5/11/24 to 5/12/24
  • I shot 74,71, and finished first out of 23. During this event, I was finally able to go into it with an open mind and no expectations. I stayed present and went one shot at a time.
  • Camp/Event
  • PKB Kandi Comer Classic
  • 4/27/24 to 4/28/24
  • This weekend I played in the Kandi Comer Classic at Orchard Creek Country Club. The first round I shot 77, which put me in 1st place. However, the second day I shot 79, because I expected to shoot well and win. I tried to go into the round with an open mind but I was not able to stay in that mindset. I finished tied for 3rd place. I plan to work on having no expectations and staying calm under pressure.
  • Camp/Event
  • PKB Delaware Valley Girls Classic
  • 4/13/24 to 4/14/24
  • The first day of the tournament was warm but 30 mph sustained winds with up to 45 mph gusts. The second day was much better, and with less wind. I shot 74,71, and finished in 2nd place. I am very proud with how this weekend went. I was finally able to straighten out my approach shots, and when I missed a green, I was able to make most up and downs. Since my last few tournaments hadn’t been going too well, it was really nice to get rid of all the pressure I was putting on myself and just play.
  • Camp/Event
  • PKB Mid-Atlantic Girls Championship
  • 4/06/24 to 4/07/24
  • A little bit warmer temperatures this weekend, but the wind was 25-30 mph sustained. I shot 78,80 to get a T3 place finish. Worthington Manor is a tough golf course that is all about placement and green control. My putting could have been better this weekend, but the greens were very tricky with severe brakes. Overall a third place finish is pretty good for the conditions.
  • Camp/Event
  • PKB Spring Bell Invitational
  • 3/23/24 to 3/25/24
  • Another tournament with tough conditions. I shot 80,78, which unfortunately was not good enough to make the cut. The field was very competitive, so it would have been a tough cut to make. I have been working to improve my approach shots because that was what was lacking. I also struggled in the wind on the first day.
  • Camp/Event
  • PKB Katherine Perry Hamski Girls Tradition
  • 3/09/24 to 3/10/24
  • The first day was cancelled due to rain. I shot 76 which got me 14th place out of 35. The conditions were cold, wet, and windy. I struggled with my approach shots a little, but I was able to make some good up and downs.
  • Camp/Event
  • PKB Rockettour Players Championship
  • 2/17/24 to 2/19/24
  • Score: 81,79,80 — Place: T17 out of 38, 20 made the cut — The weather was 35-45 degrees every day, with at least 20 mph sustained winds, which made for tough conditions. My scores weren’t bad for how the weather was.
  • Camp/Event
  • Peggy Kirk Bell Junior at Pine Needles
  • 12/28/23 to 12/29/23
  • I finished 4th out of 37. It was not my best tournament, I shot 78, 75. I recently got a new putter but on the first day I was having a lot of trouble with it and missed a lot of putts within 6 feet that I normally make. On the second day I used my old putter and my putting improved significantly. Overall, Pine Needles is a hard course that I enjoyed playing. I am constantly working to improve my putting and work through the struggles with my new putter.
  • Camp/Event
  • Hurricane Junior Golf Tournament of Champions
  • 12/02/23 to 12/03/23
  • I shot 77, 73, finished 5th out of 73. My woods, irons, and chipping was strong but my putting was lacking. If I were able to make more putts, I could have been under par. It was a hard weekend for me but I learned how to play through the bad shots as well and recover from them.
  • Camp/Event
  • Notah Begay All Girls National Championship
  • 11/09/23 to 11/11/23
  • I shot 74,74,75 and finished 14th out of 36. I struggled with my irons the second and third day, but I was able to make a lot of up and downs, especially the second day, which really saved my score. It was very windy and rainy on the second and third day.
  • Camp/Event
  • PKB Colonial Classic at Williamsburg
  • 10/28/23 to 10/29/23
  • I shot 76, 72 (+4 total) from 5800 yards. Finished 10th out of 30. Putter struggles on day 1, but I was able to straighten it out for the second day.
  • Camp/Event
  • PIAA Pennsylvania State Championships
  • 10/16/23 to 10/17/23
  • Shot 74, 74. Finished 5th in the state out of 36. My putter was lacking those 2 days, but I was strong with everything else.
  • Camp/Event
  • PIAA 2A District 6 Championship
  • 9/28/23 to 9/28/23
  • Shot 71 (-1) to win districts for second year in a row.
  • Camp/Event
  • Notah Begay Maryland Regional
  • 8/19/23 to 8/20/23
  • Shot 69,73 (-2) from 5800 yards. I placed first, winning by 5. The hardest part about this tournament was that I had never won before after being in first place after the first day. It’s always hard to play the next day after having a great round. I just had to stay calm and focus on one shot at a time. Because of my win, I am now moving on the the last stage of Notah Begay: the Notah Begay Girls National Championship in Koasita Pines in Louisiana.
  • Camp/Event
  • US Kids Teen Worlds
  • 7/27/23 to 7/29/23
  • Shot 74,75,73. Finished 22nd out of 115 (6014 yards, age group 15-18). It was a rough first 2 days with the approach shot, but I was able to fix it for the last day and my chipping was much better.
  • Camp/Event
  • Notah Begey Regional Final
  • 7/17/23 to 7/18/23
  • Shot 76,71 (+3). Finished in second place. Very hot and humid weather. I hurt my wrist when my club hit a rock on hole 15 on the second day. Hit my tee shot into the hazard on 16, but still saved bogey with an up and down. I came back with a par on 17 and 18.
  • Camp/Event
  • AJGA Junior All-Star
  • 7/11/23 to 7/13/23
  • Three day tournament with a cut after the second day — shot 73,76,72 (+5 overall) and finished T8th place — weather was hot and humid
  • Camp/Event
  • AJGA
  • 7/04/23 to 7/06/23
  • Shot 80,72,76 — rough front nine on the first day, due to nerves being my first AJGA event — pulled through and shot a 72 the second day to make the cut — great weather, upper 80s — first AJGA tournament
  • Camp/Event
  • PA Girls Junior Amateur
  • 6/26/23 to 6/27/23
  • Shot 79,77 — finished 13th — very muggy and hot weather — rain delayed for 2+ hours on Monday (day 1) — round 3 on Tuesday was cancelled due to weather
