My name is Megan Manesiotis. I am currently a sophomore (class of 2024) at North Allegheny High School in Wexford, PA. As a young girl, I grew up in a baseball/softball-oriented home. I come from three generations of WPIAL baseball champions. To that end, I was destined to be a softball player. As a freshman, I lettered on the Girl’s Varsity Fastpitch Softball team. Even though this was a tremendous accomplishment at a highly competitive high school, the season left me feeling frustrated and empty as an athlete. I began to lose my love and passion for the game softball.
Luckily as a young kid, my parents let me play many competitive sports including softball, soccer, flag football, and basketball. In 8th grade, I decided that I wanted to try golf. My parents never hesitated and found my first swing coach. My first competitive experience playing golf was during the fall of my freshman year playing for my high school Junior Varsity Girls Golf team. By the end of the season, I had improved my score and moved up to playing in Varsity matches. My freshman season only fueled my passion for the game of golf.
What I love so much about golf is that score dictates playing time. After I decided to hang up my softball cleats, I began to focus on solely my golf game and entered local tournaments. In my first tournament in June 2021, I was overwhelmed by the talent of the girls. They had all been playing in tournaments from a young age; however, this did not deter me. I was determined to improve as a golfer.
Since I started playing golf later in my athletic career, it has only pushed me to work harder to catch up to my competition. My 18 hole average has dropped from over 100 into the low 80’s in just five months. Golf has taught me to focus on the small tasks at hand and to only control what I can control. Through hard work, I believe I can achieve anything.
