Hello, I am Mya Wimer. I have been playing golf for about seven years, four of those years being on the varsity team at Nederland High School. I was co-captain my sophomore and junior years and will be the captain during my upcoming senior year.
In all honesty, I have not always been fully engaged in golf. However, in July 2021, I began working with a new private coach who immediately began correcting numerous flaws in my play. It has been somewhat of a lengthy process, but my game has shown definite improvement and has helped find my love for golf in addition to a desire to play at the college level. Beyond my high school golf tournaments in which my team will participate in the upcoming year, I plan to play in several Fall tournaments through the Southern Texas PGA.
I have also been a member of the Nederland High School varsity swim team for four years. I was team captain my junior year and will again be for my senior year.
Beyond my participation in sports, I am a member of the Key Club at Nederland High School. This organization performs community service projects such as beach cleanups, stadium cleanups, working the concession stand at sporting events, and organizing in Thanksgiving food drives. Additionally, I volunteer at a local veterinary clinic and assist with the care of animals.
My other interest is coaching. This summer, I coached young golfers at the camps offered by my private golf coach. I have also coached swimming for the past year and a half for my swim club. This has involved teaching younger children at practices during the week, in addition to being responsible for them during our summer swim meets.
I have not yet decided on a college major, but I do have two primary, and very different, interests. I am considering Kinesiology/ Sports Management with the possibility of becoming a coach, however, I also continue to maintain an interest in Animal Science as a means of attending veterinary school.
Thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement. Golf is my primary focus and I will continue to work to improve my game with the goal of playing at the collegiate level.
