Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Alexandra Kleckner, but my friends and family call me "Sasha". I am a 18-year-old hockey player living in Anchorage, Alaska, graduating in May of 2024. In October 2023, I committed to play women's Division III college hockey for Lindsay Macy at College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota.

Please see my YouTube page for game videos: @alexandrakleckner2023: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP4fwszNzE4pLeqZQPKN_w

Ultimately, it's my goal to play NCAA Division I or Division III women's college hockey. First and foremost, I am a hard worker on and off the ice, including the classroom. I am known to be mature, dependable and a coachable team player. This upcoming 2023-2024 season, I am #51, playing defense for Team Alaska's 19U AAA Girls team in Anchorage, Alaska: https://www.aktier1hockey.com/teams/?u=TEAMAL-GIRLS19UTIER1&p=home&s=hockey

I take my goals seriously and work on them every day, including regularly working on my fitness during the off season, improving the hockey fundamentals such as my shot and stick handling in the backyard or garage, as well as taking extra private skating lessons, improving edges and explosiveness. One of my high school coaches said that I have a harder shot than she had when she played as an NCAA DI defenseman at Colgate.

Furthermore, I am strong and athletic on my skates and like to be physical on the boards and in front of the net. My poke check is dependable, I am known for my tape-to-tape passing, as well as my patience as I break out the puck and look for teammates that are open. Also, I can play both right and left defense. Nonetheless, I will play anywhere a coach asks me to play, and if that means stepping in as a goalie, I will do it!  As a first year 19U AAA defenseman, I continue to improve all parts of the game, including offensive skills that create time and space. I also focus on the psychological aspect of being a competitive athlete, as well as supporting my teammates who often seek me out for my compassion and maturity.

During March 23rd-27th, I played at the USA Hockey Girls High School National Tournament in Plymouth, Minnesota, with the high school Team Alaska girls team. This team was an all star team chosen from different girls high school teams representing Alaska hockey in the high school national tournament. I was #39 on defense. This was my 3rd year in a row playing at this tournament. It was a great tournament with some talented opponents including Shattuck St. Mary's 19U high school girls team whom we lost to in the championship game (0-2 with an empty net 2nd goal).

After I hang up the skates, I see myself working in the field of sports and/or law, so I will likely go onto graduate school. Therefore, I am seeking a college/university with at least liberal arts degrees and possibly sports medicine degrees. Getting a college education is an expectation in my family (my parents are a high school educator and an administrator), so I take academics seriously, even when I am balancing sports with school.

When I am not thinking about or competing in hockey, I participate in high school track and cross-country running. I love to hike and trail run in the Alaskan mountains, fish for salmon, go to my family's remote Alaskan cabin, listen to music, play with my dogs, travel and spend time with my family and friends.

All in all, I encourage you to contact my coaches to vouch for my ongoing development and future potential as a serious student and competitive college player.

Thank you for your time!

Sasha Kleckner  (NCAA #2011956524)
