My name is Logan Shumaker-Gromek and I have been playing ice hockey for 10 years. Ever since I was 5 years old I have been in awe of this sport and that passion has only grown over the years. All throughout my childhood I played a variety of sports ranging from tackle rugby to track, but my drive to be a better hockey player rose over all other sports. I currently still do track for my high school which has helped me challenge my strength and grow as an athlete. I enjoy pushing myself on and off the ice with both athletics and academics. I am also enrolled in the gifted and talented program at my high school which has helped with all the challenges I face as a student athlete.
My coach has always used the word "gamer" to describe someone who is always in it to win it and is not afraid to have some grit. When I first heard her say "gamer" a few years ago I thought it was funny and it didn't really make sense to me. Now that years have passed and I have grown as a player I understand what she means by it. Now that I understand I have a strong desire to be a "gamer". I want to be the player that never gives up no matter how good another player or team is. I want to be the player that battles in the corner and wins every race to the puck. The drive to be a "gamer" has helped me improve my play and my strength.
Hockey has given me many amazing opportunities such as going to Nationals three years in a row and receiving the high honor of getting the Donna Guariglia Award twice. This season I have been named captain which has really helped me hone my leadership skills. I show my leadership skills through my silent actions of grit and determination on the ice. I am an extremely hard worker not only in games, but also in practices. I practice at game pace and take in everything I can improve on. I do not only focus on my weaknesses but also my strengths. I believe that being able to see your weaknesses is a strength in itself that can help you grow as an athlete, student, and as a human being. My desire is to continue playing hockey in college and find a school that is the right fit athletically and academically.
