Melanie Young '18 Recruiting Profile

I am a very dedicated student who jumped from college level courses to university level courses. Even though I was identified as "learning deficient" and placed in an Individual Education Plan in grade school, I fought hard to improve my grades and not only pass the college level courses, but I moved up to the university level, and passed these courses as well.  My drive to achieve my goal of a university scholarship was the force behind this.   

My ability to work as a unit and part of a team is a huge strength of mine. I possess the ability to make phenomenal passes to my teammates which is a big part of our success.  I possess great athletic sense and mentality, reading the play before it happens is a skill that you are born with, I am lucky to possess this trait. 

Another trait I was lucky to be born with is my size.  At 15 years old I am 5' 61/2" and 160 lbs.  I am big and strong and surprisingly agile and quick. This size is important in hockey and I put it to use wisely.  I have very little penalty minutes but use my size to enforce on the ice.  My skating skills have been developing since I started playing hockey at 4 years old. 

As a First Nations person and coming from a First Nation setting, I've had to overcome many obstacles from family tragedies to racism.  I have used these experiences to make myself stronger and to persevere. I hope to someday be successful enough to become a role model for First Nation youth.  

I spend all of my free time training and bettering myself at hockey.  I have a synthetic ice rink in the basement of my house where I spend hours working on my shot and stick handing skills.

Over the years many coaches have commented on how "coachable" I am.  I am there for the team, not myself.  I do what the coaches ask and expect of me, without question. 

I would be a valuable member of any team.
