To me hockey is more than a simple past time. It is a lifestyle, literally. Instead of a bouquet of flowers, we have a bouquet of hockey sticks. Some have fancy rugs, we have a slide board. Rather than have a second bathroom in our small row home, we chose to create a hockey closet. Even the NHL lockout didn't give us a break, we projected German Hockey on our living room walls. Yes, hockey is a family lifestyle for us, but nobody is as dedicated and devoted to this sport as I am.
Philadelphia has given me the opportunity to pursue a quality education while exposing me to a diverse population of peers and mentors. As a young student, I attended a very small school of about 60 scholars per class. From my small elementary school I felt as if I needed more- more challenges in particular. I received all A's, and graduated top of my class as Valedictorian. I applied and was accepted to the top public school in Philadelphia- Central High School, and am setting new goals to help me move forward.
You may find it surprising to learn that as an inner-city student athlete, hockey has also afforded me the opportunity to play the sport that I love with an equally diverse demographic of athletes. I started out at Rizzo Rink, a tiny South Philly recreational ice rink under the highway. I developed and grew to play on the bantam travel league, and finished my last year as co captain of Rizzo's All-Star team. Rizzo Rink has a special place in my heart, and I still volunteer as a coach for Rizzo's intramural hockey program today. I have also volunteered as a youth hockey coach in the Ed Snider Learn to Skate Program. I was lucky to get into the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Program at the in house level. I worked hard to move my way up to play on the DVHL teams. I played for the girls travel as well as the boys travel teams, working extra hard to prove myself as a girl who could play check hockey with the boys. I moved up to Bantam AA, soon outgrowing what the Snider girls' program had to offer at the time. I was invited by Snider to try out for Atlantic District Camp. Attending the District Camps for the last two years has opened the door for me to the highly competitive world of girls hockey. I was soon encouraged to join the Jr. Flyers Organization, where I currently play for their AAA 19u girls team as a 16 year old student athlete. I am looking ahead to new and more challenges.
This essay is not just about me showing off, though I do have a lot to brag about. I have worked extremely hard to get into top schools, top teams, and top organizations. All along the way, both on the rink and in the classroom, I have set and reached my goals with students and athletes not just of different genders, but of different cultures and backgrounds. These experiences as an urban athlete (that I wouldn't trade for the world) have taught me and helped to form the values I hold with regards to what it is to be a teammate and what it means to share a team jersey. I I have the mindset and capability of a winner. I am extremely hard working, and not only willing to improve, but excited to improve. While I am focused on improving myself, I refuse to let my self-driven mentality interfere with my overall team improvement mentality. I am extremely dedicated to my team because hockey is a team sport. I am dedicated and devoted to this lifestyle and will do whatever it takes to make it to the next level.
I look forward to further discussing with you my capabilities, skill, and mindset.
