My name is Maya-Anne Garetson. I've been playing hockey for the last five years. For most of my hockey career, I've played primarily with males. This season, I'll be a practice play with the Wenatchee Wild, a 16uAAA all-male team, under the coaching of Troy Mick. Playing with males has pushed me to be faster, stronger, more aggressive, and confident. During the 2023-24 season, I'll also play with the Seattle SnoKing's Female U19 AA.
On the ice, I demonstrate strong skating and shooting skills. I can hit the net from the blue line for a rebound nine times out of 10. Pinning and maneuvering on the boards is also one of my strong suits, which I learned while playing with males. My coaches have commented on my strong Hockey IQ and ability to read and react to plays on the ice.
During my free time, I volunteer at a horse therapeutic center. There, I meet and socialize with people of all ages and needs. I also work as a youth hockey and skating coach. Coaching is very fulfilling; it allows me to share my skills and love for hockey.
I want to attend a college that challenges me on and off the ice. I am undecided on a major but have considered business or law. Ultimately, I would love to stay engaged in hockey, whether it's coaching or the business side of the sport.
