,
I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is McKena Bales and I'm 16 years old.
I started playing hockey as a mite in 2014 with our local club, The Sheridan Hawks. From mite age I have always played on a co-ed team. Throughout those seasons I have shared a State Championship and several runner ups banners. In 2020 I got to be part of the first girls hockey team for the Hawks in over 10 years. We capped that inaugural season off with a State B Championship and ended up runner up this year in the State A Championships. I also have traveled with the Wyoming Cutthroats for 3 years(2 where I was the only girl at the Peewee and Bantam age level) and Team Wyoming Girls for 3 seasons also.
During my years of hockey I had a coach refer to me as a Swiss Army Knife and I feel like that really describes how I play the game. I had always been primarily a defenseman but have transitioned to center and forward the past couple of seasons. I'm very competitive and do not like to lose, which drives me to give it all I have every shift.
Besides hockey I love to work on our family cattle ranch which is located about 2 hours from where I am a junior this fall at Big Horn High School in Big Horn Wyoming. I'm also involved in Volleyball, Key Club, FBLA and Future Christan Athletes. Just this spring I got the chance to be on another inaugural team, The Sheridan Mavericks Girls Lacrosse. I was lucky enough to also get in the history books by scoring the first ever goal for our team. I ended up leading the team in goals and ground balls this season. I really enjoyed learning the game and have found I love it almost as much as hockey but not quite!!
I have enclosed a link to my YouTube channel. I apologize if the videos aren't too great but we are still learning how to make highlight clips. While watching games and trying to find highlight clips I realized that I'm not the flashiest player but I definitely feel like when I'm on the ice I make things happen. I am happy being the one to battle in the corners or be the workhorse chasing the puck. I don't need all the goals to feel like I've done my job.
I hope we can connect with a phone call or email.'d love to hear about your hockey program.
Thank you,
McKena
