Personal Statement

Lacrosse has been an imperative part of my life since the second grade. In Colorado 10 years ago no one really knew what lacrosse was. All my friends played soccer or did gymnastics, and I was played a boys sport. The only team in our area was an all boys team. My experience there wasnt the greatest for my first sports team, I dealt with plenty of bullying from the boys on my team, sometimes I would get ignored by the coaches or even sit out an entire game. This did far from discourage me; I saw it as an opprotunity to improve my game and work hard to achieve something. I worked diligently, playing catch and trying to perfevt my ground balls with my dad before we'd go in for dinner. The prejudice acts didn't stop even after playing on the team for 3 years. The head of the club, who was not a fan of me, finally decided that my time there was done, and I should learn to play with my own gender. The switch to playing with a girls stick was a challenging change, but I persevered through that as well. Our lack of leadership on my new club team was one that made it difficult to learn anything. It was a whole new game and I had no idea how to play it, and no one to teach me. Growing up with these people has helped me to grow as a part of the lacrosse community in Colorado and I've watched the sport grow exponentially over the years. Now that I'm in high school things have changed drastically, I play in all my games, I start as a varsity player for my high school team and am also playing for a travelling/club team. I've pushed my way past all the negativities that have been thrown my may and worked hard to try and succeed at this sport. Even though all this has happened to me, there hasn't been a day that I haven't enjoyed playing the sport. Where I continue my education and what level I'm playing it isn't my top priority. I would honestly just be honored with the opprotunity to continue playing the sport that I've grown up playing. I am 5' and 8" I weigh about 128 last I checked. I also have an honorable mention for my conference as a freshman. I offer many things to a team such as leadership, opptumism, and I will work hard for what I want and what I think I need to work on. Although I am only a sophomore my leadership skills are apparent both on and off the field. In school I make decisions for the current students and also the future classes, as an elected member of student council. On my high school team many people come to me for advice on technique and skill. Colorado is one of my favorite places, the vast opprotunities for outdoor activities are always awaiting you, so staying in state for school wouldn't bother me one bit. Going out of state would also be a new experience that I would be willing to discover. As far as college types come, I can't say I am too specific, just the chance to play would be fantastic. Many people don't figure out what they want to do in life until they are half way through it, and right now I think I might fall under that category. There are so many choices out there, and being a high school girl, my intrests change frequently.
