My goals for college are to go to an academically rigorous school, similar to the one I attend for high school, and to compete with a highly competitive College lacrosse team.
I’m a team player and I’m very competitive. I have played on many different teams with people of varying skills and experience, which has helped me learn to adapt the way I play under given the circumstances of the team. One example occurred in freshman year when I played for my school’s junior varsity (JV) team. My game was more developed than some of my teammates at the time, and despite the fact that I had mostly played mostly defense for travel lacrosse clubs until that point, there was a need for experienced middies on the school team. I stepped up to become my school’s starting draw-taker in the midfield because I knew my team needed my experience and leadership at this critical position. At the end of the season, I was voted team most valuable player (MVP), team ‘Beast,’ awarded for the most aggressive/relentless player, and I won the team strength and conditioning award too! When the JV season ended, I was called up to play the last few varsity regular season games and the league playoffs, fulfilling a goal I set for myself back in 7th grade--to play varsity lacrosse in the competitive Washington Independent School league (ISL) as a freshman.
This situation shows some of the important qualities that I can bring to a team, qualities like my ability and eagerness to take calculated risks to help my team be more successful and my inclination to be a team player. This was also an opportunity for me to develop my leadership skills. Because I was a more experienced player, I took it upon myself to encourage and teach my teammates some of the more subtle aspects of positioning on the field and recognizing what to do in different game situations. I think this helped our school have a really successful season and my classmates see me as a leader on and off the playing field. I try to lead by example. I’m the type of player that doesn’t give up on a play; I’ll keep sprinting back to help re-defend even if a ballcarrier initially gets past me; I’ll make the first slide, and second slide, and third slide, and keep fighting until we turn the ball over--to help my goalie and my teammates. I really appreciate that my teammates recognized those traits when they recognized me with the Team MVP and Beast awards.
I love lacrosse and can’t imagine a college experience without lacrosse being a big part of it.
