Joining my town’s local youth lacrosse team as a 3rd grader was the mere beginning of a long, successful career driven by passion and determination. As an eight year old, I didn’t know much about what I wanted to do with my life or where I was going. I did know one thing however- I loved lacrosse. I worked countless hours off the field perfecting my stick skills and learning the game.
My dedication towards the game grows with each season. I’ve taken steps such as joining my school’s indoor track team and signing up with a professional personal trainer to further enhance my endurance, strength, and balance. While all have improved with each new lacrosse season, one skill I am specifically proud of is my shot. With advanced stick skills and a core built on the basis of professional training, my shot has both fine accuracy and brute power.
My high school career has so far been driven by success. From the start of freshman year, I have solidified a starting position as an attack-man for the Westerly High School Bulldogs. Freshman year also brought along an undefeated season, a divisional title and the opportunity to play in a state final. After a hard fought game by both teams, we ended up losing by one point. While it seemed devastating in the moment, the defeat taught us resilience. My sophomore year, we practiced even harder and became an unbreakable unit. The reward was a second opportunity at the state title and the probability of moving up a division.
Not only am I encaptivated by the game aspect of lacrosse, but also by the team aspect of it. Joining the team has not only come with statistic success, but also long lasting friendships and valued teamwork. Being part of a team for so long has made me realize my true passion for working with others and learning how to connect with others.
The desire to involve myself in team environments has also driven me to join other extracurricular activities like my school’s VAASA (Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse) and character education (involved in charity events) club, as well as the reffing organization for the local youth league.
As I’ve always been told however, academics come before athletics. I take much pride in my academic achievements and continuously work to maintain them. I am in the top rankings of my class and enjoy challenging myself with AP and honors classes. In my academic progression, I strive to maintain a high GPA and continue to build on the skills needed to succeed while employed or studying.
As a student at any college or university, it would be my obligation to carry forth the many positive attributes of my character towards both the sports team and the classroom in a way that would help me succeed during and after my schooling career.
