In the 6th grade I joined my middle school’s lacrosse team simply because students weren't allowed to play UIL sports until they were in the 7th grade. I thought it would be a way to prepare myself physically for other sports, but by my freshman year I decided to quit playing basketball, soccer, and running track after realizing that lacrosse was the only sport that I truly loved playing.
I think one thing that has made me more passionate about lacrosse than I have been in past seasons is the way that my attitude has changed towards it. In the past I was very focused on my own performance during games. I would get frustrated with my teammates rather than encourage them, and if I didn't perform well in a game I would be in a horrible mood for the rest of the night. It wasn't until this past season that I've found that hyping up my teammates and getting them excited about playing is what pushes me to play my best. Having a positive and energetic attitude during practices and games has allowed me to push myself physically further than I've been able to do in past seasons, because I feel happy as I do it. I received an All-District award my sophomore year and was awarded it again this year, but this season I was also deemed offensive MVP on my high school team.
This attitude change has also put me in a position where my teammates look to me for encouragement, and I feel that this has caused me to take on the role of a leader in a way. Before games, I’m usually dancing and yelling “It’s game day” or “Let’s get it”, because I'm excited and want my teammates to be excited too. I feel like if I were to stop doing this then my team’s overall morale would decrease, or my teammates would feel like we aren’t capable of winning.
Being the first person in my immediate family to go to college and graduate with a degree has always been a huge goal of mine, but getting the chance to play lacrosse as I do so is a dream of mine. I've always been a hard worker as an athlete, but I've also always tried my best to work hard as a student. In the future I would love to have a job related to the medical field. I am currently in sports medicine and spend a lot of time at games and practices working as a student athletic trainer for different teams that play for my high school. I have also taken several classes related to the medical field including: Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions; and I plan on taking Anatomy and Physiology, Sports Medicine II, and Biomedical Innovation next year.
Overall, my aspirations are to graduate from college and get a job that will put me in a comfortable financial situation in the future, and I would love to do so with a degree from a college that I can get the chance to play lacrosse for.
