Determined, stubborn, and driven are the keywords I would use to describe myself as both a student and as an athlete. Since around the 5th grade, I have associated with these words. It was at that time in my life that I figured out I wanted to not only attend a high ranking college but also become a successful athlete. I started rowing in the 8th grade after searching for a new sport for months and months. Right away, crew was a perfect fit. It was mentally, physically, and emotionally challenging. Even though I was not the best at first, I pushed through and tried to improve every time I went out on the water.
After one season of being a rower, my team transferred me to be the coxswain for the novice freshman men. That boat taught me important things about myself as an individual and as a cox. The boys taught me to be patient, communicative, and above all resilient. They also showed me what it meant to be on a team. I've held onto those lessons since that initial year of coxing. Sometimes I may get frustrated or impatient or stubborn in an annoying way, however, I have learned to always stick through the challenges because hard work does pay off. Whether it be in school or on the water, I've come to understand to pursue my goals and work myself to the bone in order to achieve them.
I may be on a small team, but I will not let that stop me from moving forward onto a college team. I might not be a top result for a collegiate team candidate, but if you give me the chance I will prove that I put in my all no matter what the challenges are. I have always made it my goal to be the best student, athlete, and person that I could be and I will continue with that ideology into college and for the remainder of my life.
