One of the best decisions I made was joining the rowing team. I am a fierce competitor and I have always loved the water. My whole life I have played competitive sports. But, my life changed the summer before my Freshman year. That summer, a good family friend, who rowed at Cal, urged me to join her at the boat house and try rowing. I jumped on the Erg and my life changed. As soon as I got into the boat, I was in love.
Rowing has taught me about trust, teamwork, perseverance and hard work. Freshman year, rowing every day,I would routinely come home with bloody hands and was exhausted. I was pushing hard, both in school and in rowing. I take my school work very seriously, so rowing helped me with time management and life skills that will help me for the rest of my life.
Freshman year, we achieved team success by winning Nationals and I achieved personal success by pulling numbers I never thought would be possible just months before. My Sophmore season was great. We were defending our title and I was our team captain. This leadership position has taught me so much about how to motivate, take initiative and lead by example. While we fell short of our goal of winning a national title, we competed hard and finished fourth. I learned a ton last year, and am applying those learning to this season, where I am on the U19 team!
I want to row at the collegiate level to compete at the highest level while getting the best education possible.
