I am Mattea Fountain, a 16-year-old student-athlete-artist. I am a varsity coxswain with Oakland Technical High School’s rowing team. I am entering my senior year at Oakland School for the Arts in the Playwriting and Directing Program, with a background in Theatrical Performance and Classical Ballet.
Since COVID-19 shut down in-person workouts last year, I was able to continue land workouts with my team via ZOOM. While the loss of training time feels like a big setback for me as a coxswain, it was a valuable opportunity for me as a student. I learned how to take ownership of my academics by adopting new organizational skills, developing better time-management strategies, and adopting a new approach to studying. I used my pandemic time wisely by completing additional courses through online community college. I currently hold a 3.86 GPA, including honors and college courses. I will graduate from high school a year early.
My post-graduation goals include completing my undergraduate degree in Psychology, moving on to a graduate program for either Clinical Psychology or a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner training program. Ultimately, I would like to work in the mental health field with a pediatric population. In my spare time I plan to travel abroad, support organizations that rescue animals, stay physically active and volunteer to coach for a youth rowing program in an underserved community.
As simple as it may sound, my personal goal is to be a good person. This objective is central to both my family and my community. My definition of a good person is one who respectfully seeks academic, personal, physical, and emotional knowledge to work in harmony with others towards greater goals.
I would like to continue to cox competitively through college with a team that is committed to supporting and respecting its members, building a strong community both on the water and off. I believe that an unstoppable team shares the joy and passion for rowing. Each member strives to improve themselves to better the team, and the team improves itself by elevating those around it.
