When I was ten, I began racing bicycles and rose through the ranks quickly. My love of athletics, competing, and community quickly became an intrinsic part of my personality. As I entered high school I realized that I needed a team, people to stick with me through thick and thin. Being a new student I didn't know where to start but quickly found the rowing team, and subsequently found a family. The team is very small and started a year before I joined. This has been challenging but has taught me the value of every step of the process. For us, just getting to the race, to the start line, to practice is a win. I have learned very valuable lessons about what it means to be a team player. Every person has a place and has a purpose. I watch other teams with extreme hierarchies fall in on themselves, meanwhile, our team thrives on the connections we hold to each and every other person we row with. I can bring this attitude and this acceptance anywhere I go and have translated it to the rest of my life.
