Hi!! I am Kate Boone, a 15-year-old rower for Narragansett Boat Club in Providence, Rhode Island. Growing up, I didn't enjoy many sports, but when I turned thirteen and was introduced to rowing that changed significantly. I expected it to be like every other sport: me not like it and have to default to track. I had no idea that my favorite thing about my life was about to hit me. As soon as I tried rowing, I was “all-in.” Admittedly I wasn't the best rower on the team, but I kept trying. That's one of the reasons I love this sport. A lot of things came easily to me when I was younger especially academics, but rowing was one of the first things that challenged my mental and physical resolve. Because of that challenge, I have grown a work ethic and level of discipline I don't think I could have gotten from anything else.
Of course, I have had bad days, but I always decided to keep showing up and keep trying. I will never forget my first day. I got put in three-seat in an eight because I was new, and in the span of half an hour, I had caught four crabs and made a complete fool of myself. I almost decided to quit right then and there, but my older sister convinced me to give it one more day. So, I tried it again the next day, and then the next, and the next. In short order, my competitiveness kicked in and I gave my everything to try to make it to the top of my team.
Since then, I have grown to love everything about rowing: The team dynamic, the hard work and discipline, the rhythm, the adrenaline, the support everyone gives each other, the fitness, the races, everything. When I get in the shell or strap my feet into the erg, I give it my all. I build my relationships with all my friends on the team both in and out of the boat so we can all move and work together better.
I now see myself as a student-athlete. Academically, I do well and am a well-rounded honors student. I enjoy my Science and English classes the best. Along with my 4.0 GPA, I participate in many clubs and school activities.
Striving towards a college and a college crew team where I can be challenged, supported, and have a good time is my main priority in planning of my future. When I join my college crew team, I will dedicate my time, effort, support, and love for my team to honor how rowing has changed my life. I truly cannot imagine myself doing anything else.
