I was raised to work hard. I have had summer jobs, clubs, sports, and I work very hard at school. I usually spend 3 hours a night on homework and projects. I was told that a person can do anything if they are willing to put in the work. Last summer, I practiced with crew part of the week and was a full-time lifeguard in a lakefront swimming and boating area at a local summer camp. At the camp, I woke up before 6 am each morning and finally slept around 11 pm. Each day was packed with physical and social activity, and I made some amazing friendships along the way.
I believe in teamwork. My boat is great. We support one another each day. I have a close bond with my crew sisters, since we spend part of each day together at the boathouse. I like to feel and sense our coordination and rhythm as we row. The team performing at their best is the greatest experience. Being part of the team on the water makes me feel more alive. It's amazing to me that we are so much faster together than individually while on the erg.
I believe in positivity. I believe that I can do anything I set out to do. Recently it was getting my driver's license. Before that, I learned to dance to latin music. Every challenge can be overcome with a positive attitude. I try to stay positive every day. People around me know that I am a happy person and a good friend.
Helping others is my goal in life. I became a Fire Department Explorer and I then became the Lieutenant (Post Leader). Together we learned CPR and First Aid, competed in challenges, and did charitable work like fundraising and helping elderly or disabled people clean their properties. I would be honored to get a career where I can help people who need assistance.
Attending college is a dream that I have. I grew up spending summers in the LA area with my mom's aunt and cousins. I came to realize that the world is big, and there is so much to learn and do. I want to attend college so that I can build the tools I need in life and find the right career.
Rowing and water give me peace and happiness. I feel so much better after a work out. I am connected to nature, the boat, and the people around me.
As I've matured, I've overcome a learning disability with an IEP (Individualized Education Program) and, being in a state that took COVID-19 very seriously, my school was shut down for a year and a half. Online learning did not mesh well with my ideal learning style, but I've made up ground since returning to school. I really enjoy being back in-person!
My goal in life is to prepare for a career where I can help others. I gravitate towards healthcare.
If selected, I will work hard, be positive, respect the team, help others, and be a great student. I am so excited for the opportunity to learn and grow these next four years.
