I have been an athlete in various sports all my life due to the fact that I enjoy stepping onto the field and feeling apart of a team and being able to contribute my talents to something larger than myself. As a little girl I decided to stick with soccer because I fell in love with the sport and the concept of the importance of teamwork and how my individuality is tied together to create a broad picture with incredibly talented people. I feel that soccer has led me to build strong bonds and friendships with other girls that have experienced the barrier and stereotypes of female athletes but who choose to rise above by not letting society and conformity define us . Through soccer I have gained coaches and friends who continue to stand by my side to help me get through life with a smile on my face. Most importantly, soccer has been an outlet for me to rely on when I was buried with problems at home or when l felt terrible about myself. I am able to step onto the field and release all my anger and anxiety out while doing something that I am passionate about. Through soccer I have been put into situations where the pressure was intense, but I had to step up as a leader and talk to my teammates to encourage them and play nonstop in an 80 minute game. I have learned that tough situations do not just happen in sports but they will happen in life and I have been able to use these lessons and challenges as a tool to overcome hardships. After 10 years of enduring my highpoints and low points in playing soccer I definitely feel that I have mentally, physically and emotionally grown, not only as a player but as a person and there is no way that I would have been shaped as the Heavyn Agu, I am as of today if it were not for soccer.
