The trait that I take the most pride in as an athlete, student, and person is my ability to communicate with others. Ironically, from ages three to five, I did not talk to anyone outside my immediate family; I was completely silent in preschool. Somehow I always communicated nonverbally when engaged in sports, including soccer, basketball, softball, and lacrosse, basically any sport my brother was playing, I wanted to play. I could play every sport, given an opportunity, but soccer was always my favorite. It wasn’t until middle school that I found where I truly belonged on the field and started to find my voice, in goal. Even though I had become talkative in class (and everywhere else) by that time, I didn’t really know how to use that on the field, so it took awhile for me to be comfortable in my new role. I quickly mastered diving, front smothers, punches, punts, and kicks, but communication was always something that required work. I got better over the years, as I was increasingly comfortable with my club teammates, communicating with them was easier. During my freshman year of high school, I earned the spot as the starting varsity goalie. Playing with upperclassmen and against girls who play for some of the best clubs in the state was very intimidating and I knew I needed to continue to develop my voice. By the end of the season I was the loudest one on the field, offering directions, support, and encouragement to all of my teammates, many of whom I was afraid to talk to at the beginning of the season (also, we won the state championship). That season gave me confidence on the field I had never had before and I have used that to help my club team succeed as well. My passion for soccer, love for playing goalie, competitive nature, and the connections I have with my teammates are just some of many reasons I hope to continue my athletic career in college.
