My freshman year of high school I had to learn how to adjust myself to a team of players that I had never worked with before. Our team was barely managing, since we had exactly 14 players. That season I also injured myself by fracturing my hip, and I had to learn to overcome that obstacle of not being able to play. The season was brutally rough; we didn’t even come close to having a winning season. By being a supportive teammate, I learned to understand and work through challenges that can cause a team to lose hope. This skill allowed our team to turn things around.
My sophomore year, I was able to use my leadership, communication, and cooperation skills to help my my team go from a losing season to having a winning season, becoming second in our conference, and having a home playoff game after seven years. I was also able to use my physical skills of being aggressive, throwing 20-25 yard balls for throw-ins, and starting collective passing, allowing us to score. Being apart of a team that rose from the dust was the best part of my thirteen plus years of soccer. Learning from the perspective of being nothing to something has proven to me how dedicated I am to this sport and how much you can learn overtime.
This past season, my Junior season, was one for the books. We were known as the team to watch in 2019, because of our 2018 season. This season also, I was captain, so had more weight on my shoulders. With having a higher role than before, I had teammates looking up to me for advice and just being a person to talk to. I answered any questions my teammates had, and did everything I could to make their high school soccer experience one to remember. With working with many mentors, I was able to become a mentor for my own teammates, and I am very grateful for that. I hope to finish out my senior season this fall, and to find a college team that I can satisfy, while still being me.
