I am Madeline Ruth Fraser Freshour and I am a twelfth grader at Halifax County High School in Halifax County, Virginia. I like to be called Maddie. I live in South Boston, Virginia, a small town in Southern Virginia. My goal is to become an orthopedic surgeon with a focus in the field of sports medicine.
Academically, I have earned a cumulative 3.8 GPA (4.0 scale) through my junior year while taking mainly Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement classes. I am a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and am a member of National Honor Society. In addition to being a varsity soccer player, I have been a member of the varsity swimming team for the past three years. I swim the 50- and 100-meter backstroke and freestyle events and helped lead the Girl’s Halifax Comet Swim team to a Piedmont Conference Championship in January 2020, with first place finishes in the individual 100-yard backstroke, the individual 50-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle relay, and the 200-yard medley relay. I have also qualified to compete in the State Regional 5D swim meet for each of the past three years.
My extracurricular interests outside of school are varied. I am a member of the First Presbyterian Church of South Boston where I am an acolyte and also volunteer to help with vacation Bible school as well as going on mission trips to help rebuild and repair houses and buildings in areas that have been destroyed and damaged by floods and tornados. I am a licensed lifeguard and worked as a lifeguard each summer since 2018. Because of COVID-19, the park is currently closed so I now work during the week at a local ice cream shop. I am also a licensed soccer referee and I referee recreation and travel soccer games on the weekends.
I am a dedicated soccer player and play soccer year-round. I play travel soccer with the 02 Girls, Piedmont Youth Soccer League in Martinsville, VA, and I play on the Halifax County High School women’s soccer team in South Boston, VA. In the winter, I play indoor 3x3 soccer with my local YMCA. I played on the inaugural Halifax County Middle School’s girls’ soccer team in sixth grade, elected as Captain by my teammates and awarded the Coach’s Award my eighth-grade year. I served as Captain of the Junior Varsity soccer team my freshman year and my sophomore year was awarded Honorable Mention for the All-District Team Squad. I have also received my school's All Academic Award for being a scholar athlete both years the award was given. Prior to joining PYSL, I was a member of the Halifax County Soccer Club. I was selected for the VYSA 2018-19 Olympic Development Team for my region, the only year I was able to participate due to distance.
On the soccer field my favorite position is as a left attacking defender though I also play a strong center defender and center forward. I am 5’ 10” and a very physical player, with good technique and understanding of the game, though I am always trying to get better. One of my strongest assets is that I am a coachable player. I see myself as a leader on the field and I mentor to the younger players.
I love playing soccer. Soccer keeps me balanced and I love the camaraderie of the team and love the mental and physical challenge each new game brings. I am a hard worker and a team player. I am very focused and believe my skills, work ethic, and dedication will be a benefit to the right team. I would like to find a school that will allow me to continue to excel at soccer while also positioning me academically to prepare for my future in the field of sports medicine.
