From the moment I put my first pair of goggles on at the age of 2, I knew swimming was my passion. Living in Australia at that time allowed me to develop swim skills early on since I was in the water almost every day. After moving back to Alaska at age 5, I joined Glacier Swim Club but I didn’t start competitive swimming until the age of 8. Not only did I love swimming but I realized very quickly that I loved competitive swimming! Living in Juneau has not only afforded me the opportunity to swim competitively, but also fully enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities, such as skiing, hiking and camping.
During the 2022-2023 season, I was able to secure Futures qualifying times in four events: 100 SCY Breast, 200 SCY Breast, 200 SCY IM, and 400 SCY IM. At Futures this summer, I obtained my first Winter Juniors cut in the 100 LCM Breast. Then during the Alaska High School State Championship in November, I secured my Winters Juniors cut in the 100 SCY Breast. I am continuing to work hard at getting more Junior National qualifying times during the 2023-2024 season as well as broadening the number of races that I competitively swim. I am confident that together my passion for swimming and my competitive nature, teamed with the physical development that has yet to come, will help me obtain my swim goals moving forward. I am seeking a university where I can take my swimming to another level with the help of strong coaching and a competitive but supportive team environment.
While I am not fully decided on a major at this time, I am strongly leaning toward natural or medical related science. It is important to me to find a school with a broad range of course offerings so that I can explore some of the different fields before settling on a major. Being from a small town plays into my desire to attend a university with a large student body and a strong sense of school pride. Having the ability to be involved in school activities and attend sporting events are a few of things that I look forward to.
Since Juneau is a ‘land-locked’ town, which means the only way in or out is by boat or plane, travel has always played a huge role in my swimming experience. I have to fly to every single swim meet which means being gone for several days and missing lots of school. During high school swim season, not only do we have to fly to every meet but we also sleep on gym and classroom floors while away. This unique experience has helped me become a confident traveler, learn how to manage my time so that I can continue to excel in the classroom, and swim under less than ideal conditions.
