I am a fighter. I started swimming when I was 10 years old, which is considered late. So starting off I was already at a disadvantage. Also, even though my physique is built to be a swimmer I was not naturally gifted with the talent. However, I never let such aspects discourage me. Instead, I created the mindset that I always had to work harder than everyone around me in order to get where I wanted to be. This meant dedicating my time to cross training-- running and surfing, as well as countless hours inside the gym developing my muscles and cardio vascularity ensuring I am explosive and strong in the water.
However, outside of the water, I faced many struggles. I faced physical/mental abuse from my father. I have carried such challenges with me every step of the way and have spent countless hours with therapists/sport psychologists trying to develop the right mindset ensuring it would not affect my athletic performance. While I will admit that it has hindered my ability to perform in the past, I have now learned to utilize such topics as a strength, and developed a strong determination in everything I do. So now, with his passing in 2020, I continue to uphold a promise I made to myself years ago, that I will achieve my goals, something he was unable to do. No matter what I face in my sport, I will never quit, and that's a promise.
