The gift of life allows me to be the athlete that I am today. My name is Miya French, a 17 year old entering my senior year of high school, class of 2022. I have held a 4.0 + thus far during my high school years. I was born in 2004 with a liver condition and have had multiple surgeries since 8 weeks old. I received the Gift of Life, a living donor liver transplant in 2009 at the age of 5 years old from my 18 year old sister. After receiving my transplant, I was able to enroll in school and enroll in swim classes the summer of 2010. I was invited to join the Marin Pirates Swim Team after 3 months. I have been dedicated to the Marin Pirates club team which retired their competitive club team in 2020. The coaches formed a new USA swim team known as the Thunder Coast Aquatics, (TCA). I am TCA's athlete representative and a member of the Diversity & Inclusion committee for Pacific Swimming. I have been on the high school varsity team since Freshman year. I also received MVP for my Freshman season and unfortunately Covid-19 affected our Sophomore season. I was named Team Captain for my Junior year and assisted with coaching. I am also an active participant in the US Transplant Games of America and the World Transplant Games. In 2017, I represented the US Team in Malaga, Spain and broke world record swim times. I am looking forward to the next World Transplant Games in 2023, Australia. To be able to share my journey with others and spread the importance of organ transplantation is an active part of my life. Swimming is not only my passion but allows me to stay healthy and live my life to the fullest. I feel that my dedication and ability to balance swim and school will make me an ideal candidate for your swim team.
