There is a common stereotype given to us black people, and that is we cannot swim. When I first realized I was meant to swim was when I moved to the south. After an embarrassing incident at one of my friends pool parties I was very determined to learn. Later came swim lessons and soon I was advancing to higher levels of class. Although I made progress I barley could handle putting my face in the water.
I continued to swim throughout my life while even enrolling in multiple life guarding camps. I was starting to fall in love with this extra curricular activity that I once hated. My love for swim eventually met me again in life but in a way I would have never expected- COMPETITIVE HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING.
Although I do not have any idea what awaits me in my academic future, I know for sure that swimming will be apart of my athletic future. It’s going to take some hard working hours in the pool and also in the classrooms, but I am dedicated to this sport and I am willing to improve and show narrow minded people that not every person of color fits into that stereotype.
