I have been in the water longer than I can remember, even before I could crawl or walk. I started swimming lessons as an infant and by the age of six, I was completing swimming levels so quickly, I was in classes with kids more than double my age. One day at the pool, as my parents were wondering what to do with me, my mom happened to see a swim team practicing. The rest is history and I have been swimming competitively ever since. I love to be in the water and I love to race.
Swimming has taught me many life lessons and skills. As a student athlete training up to eighteen hours a week, time management and self discipline are essential. I am dedicated to my sport but also to my education. I work extremely hard both in and out of the pool. I am very coachable and I am always open to feedback to help me improve my strokes. I am passionate about swimming and I am a positive role model on my team.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to compete at many meets within my home province of Nova Scotia and in New Brunswick. I competed in the New Brunswick Open Cup in January of 2023 where I placed 4th in 200 IM, 2nd in 200 Breast, 4th in 100 Breast and 2nd in 50 Breast (all age group finals). I have competed in the David Fry East Coast Championships and the Ken Dunn Nova Scotia Provincial Championships, both in Halifax, where I have raced against swimmers from across the Atlantic Provinces. These opportunities have pushed me to become a better swimmer and to learn how to handle myself under pressure. One of my goals is to qualify for the Eastern Championships held yearly in Quebec or Ontario in the near future.
In the classroom, I am a dedicated student who has achieved excellent grades in my Grade 11 year (90% final average). I am a very well-rounded student and have taken courses in Humanities, Business, Fine Arts, Social Sciences, Sciences and Math. I am a School Prefect and on the Student Council. At my Grade 11 graduation in June, I received the Lieutenant-Governor’s Medal which is awarded to a Grade 11 student who has demonstrated qualities of leadership and service in the school and community and commendable performance academically.
I work at my school as a playground supervisor (before and after school) and I have led a weekly art club for students in Grades Primary-Grade 2. I have also worked as a camp leader for day camps at my school over March Break and summer vacations. In addition to working, I have also spent over 150 hours this year volunteering in our Pre-Primary classroom where I help students with their school work and assist them in the classroom.
In September, I will enter my final year of high school. I will once again be a School Prefect and I have been nominated by my peers to be the Co-President of the Student Council. I am looking forward to my Senior year of high school, but I am also looking ahead to my future when I leave Armbrae Academy. It is my goal to swim on a varsity swim team at the university level because I love to compete and I want to experience the comradery of being part of a team while at school. I am confident in my abilities as a student athlete and I know I have what it takes to succeed at the next level if given the opportunity.
