My name is Paige South, and I am currently a junior at North Canton Hoover High school in North Canton, Ohio. I have been competitively swimming since I was seven years old. Most of my swimming experience was with the North Canton YMCA. I have swum for my high school for the past three seasons, and I am a member of the CCS (Canton City Schools) Club Swim Team which is a USA Swimming sanctioned team. My main strokes are backstroke and freestyle.
During my freshman season (2017-2018), I advanced from the Sectional Meet to the Northeast Ohio Division I District meet where I placed 10th in 100 back and 17th in the 50 free. I was named first team all Federal League and second team all county. Immediately following the high school season I competed at the YMCA Great Lakes Zone meet. I also swam on relays at the YMCA National meet in Greensboro, North Carolina.
In the summer of 2018 I joined the CCS (Canton City Schools) Club swim team and swam long course for the first time. Joining the CCS team has really helped build my confidence in my swimming abilities.
During my sophomore season (2018-2019), I advanced from the Sectional meet to the Northeast Ohio Division I District meet where I placed 6th in the 100 back and 17th in the 100 free. I also swam on two relays at the District meet which included the 200medley relay and the 400 free relay. I swam backstroke in the 200 medley relay which placed 1st and set a District record. On the 400 free relay I swam the lead-off leg and we placed 3rd. At the OHSAA Division I State swim meet, I was a member of the 400 free relay which placed 7th in the state. My team, North Canton Hoover Vikings Girls Swim Team, was State runner up, placing second by only three points. Honors that I received my sophomore season include: Stark County Swimmer of the Week for Week 7, First Team All Federal League, First Team All County, and All Ohio.
Following my sophomore high school season, I competed with the CCS Swim Team. At the Lake Erie Senior Championship Meet, prelims were short course and finals were long course. I made finals in the events in which I entered and many of my long course times were personal bests. I also competed with the CCS Team on relays at NCSA in Orlando, Florida. During the long course season I swam at Speedo Sectionals at Cleveland State University.
During my junior season (2019-2020), I advanced from the Sectional meet to the Northeast Ohio Division I District meet where I placed 6th in 100 back and 8th in 50 free. I also swam on two relays. I swam back in the 200 medley relay that placed 3rd, and I swam lead off on the 400 free relay that placed 2nd. At the OHSAA Division I State Swim Meet, I swam on three relays. My 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay both made the consolation finals. My 200 free relay made A final, and we placed 7th in the state. Honors I received my junior year include: Stark County Swimmer of the Week- Week 4. First Team All Federal League, First Team All County, and All Ohio.
The pool is not the only place I work hard. I am a hard worker in the classroom as well. In the third grade I found out I am dyslexic and have dysgraphia. I have an IEP to allow for some extra help when needed. I am in all general college preparatory courses. My strengths in the classroom include my organization and time management skills.
My goal after high school is to swim at the collegiate level and pursue a degree in education. I love swimming and being part of a team. I feel I will be an asset to any team as I understand what it means to work hard and I will do what I can to help out my team.
