My name is Bridget Karaba. The stark difference between me and other swimmers is that I never swam competitively until my sophomore year. I don’t have years of experience. In fact, all I could do a year ago was swim freestyle in an incredibly poor fashion just to keep myself from drowning.
I walked onto the Dublin Coffman Swim Team that was gearing up to win State Championships for the 2019-2020 season (and did). Now, a year later, I competitively swim events in both freestyle and butterfly. My pure determination and willpower has led me to be able to help them defend their title this upcoming year.
Since COVID-19 has hit, I’ve been able to focus on the fundamentals of swimming and improve my personal best times exponentially. I’ve been committed this whole offseason to improving and I only intend to improve more once our season begins. Since we haven’t had any meets yet, on average my personal best has gone from a 28.27 in February to a 23.95-26 in my main event: the 50 free. That’s almost a 5 second decrease in my last official recorded time from February. I intend to improve that this upcoming season.
In just a year, I’ve learned so much about the sport and I love it. I love the intense environment and I love swimming with my teammates and supporting them. I feel strongly that I have tremendous potential in this sport.
I wish to continue to swim in college and focus on balancing swimming with excelling at school. I intend to major in engineering and minor in business.
