I have been a part of the Upper Arlington High School Swim Team for the past three years and plan to continue swimming through my senior year and into college. A typical season includes swimming 50 weeks a year, averaging about 5 hours of training a day. These workouts consist of swimming, ab work, and weightlifting.
I have made it to the OHSAA State Swim Meet my freshman, sophomore and junior years, placing 13th, 8th, and 6th respectively in my best event, the 50 freestyle. I was also a part of the winning 200 freestyle relay at the state meet both my sophomore and junior years. My contribution helped our team win the States both of these years. My 200 freestyle relay also achieved an All-American Award in Swimming my sophomore year. As a junior, I qualified for the state meet in the 100 butterfly, placing 17th overall. Last summer, I participated in the 2015 Futures Swim Meet in Greensboro, North Carolina, where I swam some of my best long course times in the 100 butterfly, the 50 freestyle, and the 100 freestyle. I also play water polo for Upper Arlington High School, where we've won our state tournament in 2015 and 2016.
For the last 3 years, I have been an instructor for a program called SwimAmerica. In this program, I help teach children how to swim on the weekends for 2 hours a day teaching kicking and the beginnings of freestyle and backstroke swimming.
Along with teaching kids how to swim, I have worked with a local vacation bible school for many years and hope to be a counselor at 6th grade camp this fall. I also helped to organize an event to honor my aunt, who passed away when I was in the 8th grade. In the first year the fundraiser made more than $4500 which will go towards new playground equipment at the school where she taught third grade. Next year, I plan to take over the event as part of my senior capstone project with the ultimate goal of creating a scholarship at Upper Arlington High School in her honor.
In the classroom I have had similar successes. I've been on the Honor Roll every quarter of my high school career achieving a 4.16 cumulative GPA. I'm in the top 10% in my class of over 300 students and have really enjoyed my time in the classroom. I'm planning to focus on the sciences in college and am interested in schools with strong programs in this area.
Outside of the pool and classroom, I work as a waitress at a restaurant called The Chocolate Cafe. I also enjoy photography, cooking, music and babysitting.
My goals for college include continued success in the pool and classroom through hard work and dedication. The successes I've achieved in the competitive academic and athletic environment of Upper Arlington High School give me the confidence that I can obtain these goals at the next level.
