Since the age of eight, tennis has played a central role in my life. Initially, I started out playing in local recreational classes, and around the age of 11, I realized my passion for the sport was undeniable. From that point on, I decided to take the journey and work towards playing collegiate tennis.
I consider myself more of an aggressive player who likes to dictate the point by hitting powerful groundstrokes and placing the ball strategically. I also have a strong slice and kick serve that allows me to set up the point really well. My backhand is very reliable, and my forehand is also very strong, and usually, the shot I dictate points with. When it comes to being more defensive, I am good at running down shots and being consistent with a quality ball. I’m also constantly working on my footwork and agility, as I believe it is one of the most important components when playing tennis. In doubles, I’m very good at communicating, tracking what’s happening during a point, and anticipating what can happen next.
I also find myself good at leading, as I can motivate and inspire others. I’m good at connecting with people, showing empathy to others, and helping out in any way I can. I may also seem reserved and quiet, but I like to think that is my subtle confidence in me. I consider myself to be very humble, and most importantly extremely grateful.
I have dealt with adversity, which has defined and influenced who I am. Throughout my journey, I’ve learned to overcome these challenges and thrive during hard times. Tennis taught me to never give up, to stay determined, and to persevere through whatever comes my way. Through this sport, I have also learned the definition of working hard, being dedicated, and having discipline. The skills I’ve learned while playing this sport not only applies to my tennis game but also to things outside of tennis.
Academically, I take my education seriously and believe that it is an invaluable tool. I have chosen Sports Psychology to be my field of study, as I find the mental side of tennis very intriguing and challenging. Someday I would like to give back to the sports community by applying what I have achieved in school and what I’ve learned through personal experiences.
