My name is Brooke Whitten, and I began playing tennis nine years ago. Coming from a small middle school where the sports program was limited, I played both offense and defense for the fall field hockey team, was weekend goalie on a Town soccer team, was a power forward on the school’s winter basketball team, and played short stop on the spring softball team. Unfortunately, there was never a tennis team at my school until last year at my high school. Before then, I always made sure to spend my summers on a tennis court, and I have recently started training for the season three days a week starting last October. For my high school, I played as a starter in first doubles last year, but I am striving to play singles this year. In ranks, I was the fourth player out of my whole team. Since I have been playing since such a young age, I have many skills in this sport. My other main sport is volleyball, and I have been playing since last year. I made varsity as a freshmen and have continued successfully on the team, and have achieved a few awards. Last year, I received the Offensive Player of the Year award, and this year, I was chosen as one of the Cape and Islands League All Star players. The sports that I have played have influenced the person who I am today. Sports have made me a better person in multiple ways. In between sports seasons, my main focuses are training for the upcoming athletic season and concentrating on my academics. With a 3.72 GPA, I have been successful in the classroom. By keeping up with my training, I hope to be able to help my team in every way possible and make an impact. Being on athletic teams, I have learned the values of teamwork, good sportsmanship, leadership, and commitment. The team effort of a tennis team has helped to develop my personality in a positive way.
For the future, I am looking for a small college where I could play tennis and volleyball while studying for a degree in business management. To prepare for this, during volleyball’s off-season, I am either training or playing tennis while squeezing in as much of both sports as possible. For volleyball, I play for the Cape Cod Juniors Volleyball Club and on Monday nights over the summer, I play volleyball with the Barnstable Summer Volleyball High School Program, and I attend a one week volleyball camp in July to gain more skills and learn more about each position in the game. With tennis, I am apart of the Bass River Tennis Club that plays three days a week over the summer, I train and play matches over the winter at Mid Cape Racket Club, and I have been playing at the Sandy Pond Tennis Club for around eight years, three mornings every week of the summer. For more diverse training, a favorite pastime is boxing. I work out both with gloves on and with kickboxing twice a week to gain strength and agility. Staying active in school, a committee that I will be joining this winter is for the Yearbook. My academics are on track to be inducted into the National Honors Society next year, and I am committed to several local charitable organizations.
I am looking forward to my college career and earning a degree to help set a path for my future. At the same time, I am looking forward to playing tennis and volleyball throughout my college career. I look forward to any day in which I am able to play in a volleyball game or tennis match and am grateful for the opportunity to play.
