As a 3-year high school tennis player – with previous soccer and softball experience - it was the more personal accountability of tennis that made me fall in love with it. Teamwork in doubles was a key lesson for me. Doubles showed me the importance of constantly improving and practicing skills in a fun way. And that with constructive criticism and joint motivation can create our best performance – which led to a county league top team award in 2018-2019 season.
For the 2019-2020 season, my goal was to play varsity singles. I took lessons from my Evert Academy time and worked with both my high school coach, my dad as a PTR instructor, and with various pros to tune my skills. After improving my consistency, power, variety of shots, and serve, I was very proud to have made 3rd and 2nd singles.
In one of my recent visits to a college, I happen to head over to their tennis center and realized they had a multi-college invitational. After watching several of the matches, I asked to confirm - "is this varsity or junior varsity?" I asked only because after watching some games I felt I could easily hit and keep up with these players, and my style of game could challenge them further. They confirmed it was varsity teams and that convinced me to expose myself to college athletics.
While I initially thought I could compete as part of Club Tennis, I now see the opportunity for greater competition, as I pursue my STEM degree as a Latina in a mix of Computer Science, Analytics, AI and Machine Learning combined with Business Information Systems and Operational expertise.
I look forward to understanding further what your program expectations and needs are, as well as how participating in college athletics can be balanced with academics, social and personal growth objectives I have.
Thank You -
