Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Karina. I am 17 years old and am starting my last year of secondary school. My goal has always been to play singles and doubles at the college level. Although tennis is an individual sport, I love the idea of having teammates and working together. For this reason, I am a huge doubles fan and I strongly believe my singles, and especially doubles skills can become an asset to any team. I think playing tennis in this format is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I plan to make the most of it.

I am a good candidate because I work hard to achieve my goals and will continue to do so. I am fueled by my love for the game, so that even on bad days I can manage to push through it. I trained most of my life at the Newmarket Community Tennis Club and have spent some time playing in the ATI Girls National Program. I currently train at Richmond Hill Country Club under amazing coaches. I started playing OTA tournaments at the age of 12 and continue to play as often as I can.

My game is ideal for doubles, but is also effective in singles. I'm most confident when I'm volleying at the net and closing in to finish the point. I take pride in my reflexes and ability to place the ball accurately and effectively when I'm at the net. Serving and volleying is a skill I have worked hard on in order to generate offence quickly and throw off my opponents. I am also a supportive and encouraging partner and can be a great doubles asset to any team. I am able to adapt my game style depending on who I'm playing, allowing me to do well against many kinds of players. I am currently still touching up my groundstrokes and working on their consistency, as well as the quality of my serve. I have faith that once my hard work starts to show, I'll be able to go to the next level.

At age 11, I made the decision to dedicate myself to tennis, but up until then, I did a variety of other athletic extra-curriculars. They include swimming, dancing, karate, golf and skiing. I also try to maintain a regular gym schedule whenever I'm not busy with training or homework.

In addition to playing, I coach. I have always been good with other people- children especially. I spend time teaching them the basics of tennis and playing fun games, all while encouraging good sportsmanship between one another.

I spent my childhood attending a French Immersion school and remained in the French Immersion stream throughout high school, where I also took an interest in learning business, specifically marketing and finance. As I got older, I began to understand the importance of balance between academics and athletics. As a result, I have become a great student-athlete and am definitely capable of performing at the next level.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to dedicating myself to an outstanding college tennis program and working hard as a student-athlete to achieve my full potential as a tennis player.

Events

  • SVB Training Camp
  • 3/11/22 to 3/17/22
  • I spent a week training at the SVB Academy in Tampa, Florida. I trained for 2 hours, followed by an hour of intense fitness every day. Visiting an academy out of my country was a wonderful learning experience and I'm hoping to get the chance to visit SVB again, along with many other prestigious academies to come.
  • Camp/Event
  • Tennis Rocks
  • Tennis Rocks is a doubles playoff event organized by the OTA for all junior players who have played in intercounty. I have played for team Newmarket during years 2017-2020. We placed in the top two every time we have played and it has always been one of my favorite summer events.
  • Camp/Event
  • ICTA Junior Mixed Championships
  • This is a newly funded event by Tennis Canada and UTR. It is an intercounty playoff event for juniors. I played for team Fraser and placed second overall. It was a great opportunity to play amazing doubles with and against my friends. I hope this becomes another yearly event and I continue to get the chance to play in it.

Training

  • Newmarket Tennis Club High Performance Program
  • 5 years
  • I have been playing in this program at my local tennis club for many years. It is run by head pro Brian Draxl, father of currently ranked ATP 500 Liam Draxl, and manager Shane Hickson. I started off only twice a week and for a number of years I would train here four times a week.
  • ATI Girls National Program
  • 1 year
  • This program is run by Bobby Mahal at the Veneto Tennis Club in Vaughan, Ontario. I joined in March of 2022 and had the opportunity to play with many highly ranked girls.
  • Richmond Hill Summer Training Camp
  • 1 year
  • I have only spent one summer at this camp and am loving it more every day. I got to train with many top ranked boys and girls and learn from several credible coaches. I hope to train here for the winter season as well.

Additional Sports

  • Swimming
  • 8 years
  • Club/Travel Team
  • I stopped pursuing swimming right after completing my first lifeguard course. I remain great swimmer and am confident that if I ever wanted to take it up again, I'd be successful.
  • Skiing
  • 10 years
  • Club/Travel Team
  • I have been on skis since the age of 5. I've been to many lessons around the province of Ontario, including Horseshoe Valley, Blue Mountain, Mount St. Louis Moonstone and even Mont-Tremblant in Quebec.
  • Competitive Cheer/Dance
  • 7 years
  • Club/Travel Team
  • From the ages 6-13, I danced at the local studio called iDance Studio. I did many styles, such as tap, acrobatics, jazz, hip hop and ballet. I received an offer to join the competitive dance team but turned it down to focus on tennis.
  • Golf
  • 1 year
  • Club/Travel Team
  • During the summer of 2021, I did weekly golf lessons. I enjoyed it and although I rarely get to play because of the weather in Canada, I enjoy knowing and understanding golf.
