My name is Kate Higgs, and I was born into a tennis family. Both of my parents played competitive tennis, and my father played in college. They gave me my first racquet when I was 5 years old, and from that point I’ve grown into a player who has been the #1 or #2 girl on my high school tennis team since I was a freshman.
I grew up playing with my brothers and my dad and my male coaches, and I am not afraid to hit hard with the guys, and I’ve developed a big forehand. I’ve learned how much fun it is to be on a team, and how to encourage and build others up as we worked together towards our team tennis goals. We finished #19 in the state of Texas 5A my freshman year and #15 in the state 5A my sophomore year. Our team goal for next year is to make the top 10 in Texas. I have learned that hard work really does pay off when you have prepared physically and mentally, you will always be in a position to compete, both on the tennis court and in life in general. Individually, I have placed 3rd two years in a row in our Region in girls singles, and got to be a State Alternate both years, but my goal is to get to compete in the Texas State tournament in girls singles the next two years of high school.
I am currently ranked #7 in my high school class of 475, and my high school goal is to stay in the top 10. For college, right now I am interested in a lot of different things like law, physical therapy, or marketing and advertising, so I’m not exactly sure yet what I want to study, but I definitely want to earn a degree, and possibly attend graduate school as well.
I have a twin brother, Will, and my brother John is a year younger than we are, and all 3 of us play tennis. I currently have a student pilot’s license, and my mother and my grandfather are both pilots and have been teaching me how to fly in a Cub. I also enjoy singing and theater and have performed in several musicals at school and church. I’ve also enjoyed getting to try some new things in high school, like being on Yearbook staff and culinary and sports marketing courses.
