I am a renaissance teen. The renaissance was an important part of history as it contributed to the field of academics and how things are taught today. The term “renaissance-man” means well-rounded, someone who is knowledgeable in multiple areas. Whether it’s academics, art, music, or athletics, I give it my all; thus, this is why I would describe myself as a renaissance teen. This quality will enrich my desired future career in medicine one day, as well as my collegiate career in tennis.
As a child, I have always been academically inclined and curious. Along with being an honor roll student for many years, my passion for learning grew an astonishing amount. When going to the store, I wanted to read every label, every sign, and the books there. My desk is overflowing with books that I bought from book fairs over the years, and will most likely grow until there is no room to put them. Reading has given me an active imagination, which I channeled into art. In freshman English class there were big artistic projects for books we read, and while being given instructions I would have ideas of creative drawing projects. Ever since then, I’ve used various forms of art to have fun and relax.
My love for art grew into a curiosity for music in the sixth grade, when I decided to learn to play the violin. I picked it up quickly and had only about a year's worth of lessons. It’s been about five years now, and I have been “self-taught” and enjoy playing western classical and Indian Bollywood music for my enjoyment.
For me sports are a lot like academics and art. One needs to be intellectual and creative, ready to think outside the box. I learned this from tennis and gymnastics as a child. I picked up a tennis racquet at four years old and as I grew older I came to love tennis more, in that I realized tennis is an intellectual and artistic game that requires both mental and physical stamina, and it also feels good to hit a winning shot every now and then. As an active eight year old I started gymnastics and continued for four years and ultimately decided that tennis should be the sport to have all of my focus, as I love it so much.
Conclusively, my biggest dream is to be a doctor, but until then I want to focus on the things that are in my grasp; such as finishing high school, playing tennis in college, and earning my degree. Being a collegiate athlete is not easy, but just like a renaissance teen I will give it my all.
