My journey as a runner began in junior high. I joined track and field but was devastated when I broke my arm leaving me unable to run for the season. Instead of quitting however, I decided to use this as an opportunity to grow and serve my teammates. Despite my injury, I attended every practice, helped with equipment, timing, as well as provided food, water and needed encouragement for runners as they competed. Although unable to obtain physical strength that season, a valuable lesson was learned. Being part of a team means more than just competing, it requires dedication, loyalty, and perseverance. I learned a lot about my self personally, and built moral strength at that time. Helping others in need has driven me to pursue a career in Nursing.
Once I entered high school I had the desire to join the cross country team in addition to the track and field team. Being a freshman though, I was very nervous and reluctant to do so. Not from lack of desire but because I felt inadequate as an athlete. I looked up to the older and more experienced runners and wanted to become like them but seemed very distant from that goal. Through the encouragement of my parents I joined the team and am so happy I did.
Dedicated to build my personal and physical strength, I set out a course to try to improve all areas of my life. I was so humbled to receive the MVP Award in cross country as well as track and field, was moved up to varsity, have received Academic Excellence Awards, and the Coaches Award for “Displaying a Can Do Attitude, Hard-work, and Dedication". This was such an accomplishment and honor for me! To be compared to those that always inspired me meant a great deal. I have found a sport that I love and have benefited from it in so many ways. The skills, knowledge, and strength developed have been invaluable.
Through competing as a runner I have made lasting friendships, have learned how to balance my academic workload, and how to discipline myself physically. These attributes will continue to aid me on my path to higher education. I envision my college years to be a period of additional personal growth and look forward to gaining knowledge from competing at a college level. I will strive to be an asset to your team by displaying the characteristics developed in high school and will show this through my conduct on the track course as well as in the class room. I aspire to become a better student and athlete and look forward to the knowledge your team and institution will provide.
