I am Delaney Jose, a 17 years old sophomore at Thomaston High School in Thomaston, CT. I have a weighted GPA of 4.85. I am a Shot Put and Discus thrower, with secondary events of Javelin and Hammer.
Academically, I am a very hard working student. I love to learn new things and grow as a student and person. I am an academically inclined student taking AP Calculus AB, UConn ECE U.S History, UConn ECE Physics, in addition to honors English and honors Spanish III. Furthermore, I am taking part in a 3 year science and engineering cohort where I am researching Covid-19 effects on mother and infant health. I am working with my mentor, Dr. Catherine Buck from Yale Heath, to produce and perform a research project and write a research paper. This cohort is preparing me for my path to study biology, specifically majoring in Physical Therapy.
I am a very involved student, not only academically, but also in school extracurriculars. I am a representative on my class council and help run many events for our class. I am a part of the Women in STEM club, BIO (Beauty inside and Out: Women Empowerment Club), Student Council, Interact (a volunteering club through our local rotary club), and I have approximately 30 hours of community service between freshman and sophomore year. This is including my position on the Thomaston Board of Education as a student representative for the 2021-2022 school year.
As for physical training, I am taking crossfit and weightlifting classes three times a week, as well as participating in my seasonal sports. On top of track and field, I play both basketball and field hockey. In and out of the classroom, I’m a leader, and this is showcased through my athletic performance and skills. I am known to take underclassmen and even middle schoolers under my wing, giving them positive reinforcement, and making sure they are the best academically and athletically that they can be.
In addition, I have also have received many leadership opportunities and awards. I am a 2021 Hugh O'Brien Youth (HOBY) Leadership graduate and stay very involved in HOBY events as well. I have attended 3 leadership conferences and I was given the honor of being a 2019 Connecticut Association of Schools Leadership award recipient.
In my free time, I like to volunteer at my church, making projects like big brother and big sister bags for the hospital where my mother works and knitting baby blankets for NICU babies. I also have been volunteering as a worker at a local women and baby resource center, Carolyn's Place, helping our in as many ways as possible.
I have made it my goal to leave an impact on my school before I leave, as well as my community. Whether that is on the field, court, in the throwing circle, or in the classroom, I aspire to be a catalyst for positive change. If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out and let me know. I would love to hear from you, thank you for your time and interest.
