My name is Jori Altman and I am a sophomore Staples High School. I am a long jumper, sprinter, and thrower in the Varsity Indoor/Outdoor team.
In middle school, my dad took me to a track meet at the college he went to, and from there I fell in love with the sport. In sixth and seventh grade, I participated in the Westport Police Athletic League track program, where I ran with the high school coach once a week. In eight grade, I started to take track more seriously and began competing in meets and trying different events. Freshman year of high school, I made the varsity team both indoor and outdoor, and competed in LL State Championships and Adidas Track Nationals during the outdoor season.
As an athlete, I am very determined and will always try my hardest. I am always the first one to practice and the last one out the door, and I try to help my coaches and teammates in any way possible. I love the stress of a big meet and the challenge of a hard practice. Track & Field is what I wake up thinking about in the morning, and what I go to bed dreaming about at night. Freshman year, my personal best in long jump was 15' 6.25", 13.48 in the 100m, and 24' 9.5" in shot put. Since the fall of sophomore year, I have been training with my coach and teammates in preparation for the 2024-25 Indoor season. My current PRs from this indoor 2025 season are 15' 7" in long jump, 8.03 in the 55m dash, and 24' 6" in shot put. Additionally, this fall my coach gave me the opportunity to work as an assistant coach at the middle/elementary school PAL track program that I previously participated in. Over the course of 10 weeks, I coached 2nd - 8th grade students on the weekends. I loved coaching the kids and making friends with them, and I really hope to help out again in the future.
As a student, I am hardworking, reliable, and organized. Typically, I am shy and reserved, but track has helped improve my confidence and leadership skills both in and out of the classroom. Over the past two years, I have maintained a 4.19 unweighted GPA and have been on the First Honor Roll, as well as participating in numerous honors classes.
Outside of track and school, I love being with my family and in nature. Right now, I am part of my school's Model UN club and Yearbook club, and I work at a local running store in my free time.
Overall, I am really looking forward to my upcoming track seasons and can't wait to continue contributing to the team.
