As an 8th grade middle school student I was asked to skip my last year running at the middle school level where I would have the opportunity to set personal and school records that would be expected to stand for the foreseeable future and run for the high school team which was in need of strong competitors. My family has instilled in me a mindset that the success of the team is far more important than individual success so I made the commitment to move up early and take on the challenge. I was fortunate to be the top rated runner for the high school teams both my 8th grade, 9th grade and 10th grade years where I tried to make a point of leading by example during training and competitions. During my sophomore year I have been given the honor of being a team captain which has given me the chance to lead more vocally. To me this privilege carries a heavy responsibility on the cross country course, in the locker room, in the classroom, and outside of school both in season and during the off season. Based on my competitive nature I have no intention of losing this privilege in my remaining high school years. By the time I reach college I expect to have three years of experience as an appointed team leader at the high school level and 5 total years as a leader by example. Off the athletic field I strive to be a top performer academically, competing with my classmates for top scores amongst my entire grade and expect to be, if nothing else, in the discussion for valedictorian. In both my freshman, sophomore, and junior years I have served as class secretary and enjoy having a voice in decisions that will shape not just mine but all of my classmates’ future years. I expect to be a person a college will be proud of as both a student and an athlete as I have been in my high school. I strongly believe in being a model to other students and student athletes alike.
