I am at my best when challenged to learn and improve whatever it is I am doing. Whether I am challenged to improve myself as an individual or as part of a team, I love to learn new things that can help me improve athletically and also personally. That is what I love so much about Track.
Sprinting is something where the process of learning and improving is never over. No matter what you might achieve there is always something else to learn and implement to do better and be better to refine your craft. It is as much a mental commitment as it is physical. There is equal combination of brute strength, strategy and mental toughness. Track has taught me how to deal with success, failure, commitment, loyalty and perseverance. These are all things that I take with me into my academic and personal life.
To keep in shape in the offseason I also play volleyball and very much enjoy that because volleyball is really about teamwork. Being on the same page with your team with respect to an offensive strategy and trusting your team to react as necessary to address what is coming back at you...quickly. It is an environment where to be successful you have to know your role, trust those around you and work hard to dominate in an organized way. I also really love my teammates and some of them are some of my best friends. It is a lot of fun. Much of this still applies to Track. Though my events are individual, I still value and trust my team and coaches to teach, challenge and motivate each other throughout our season. We can all get better individually and as a team as well. We all have to play a part to step up when needed for the team.
It is my hope to be able to continue to run track as I transition to College. I have worked very hard to focus on achieving strong academic results so that I might be able to find a great school where I can be successful both academically and athletically. I believe that a person needs to have an outlet for all areas of their life to balance out the intensity that might occur in one area at any given time. Finding a program to push me academically and athletically is very motivating to me.
I know I can be a great team member and with the right coaching and support, I also know I have a lot to learn and accomplish in Track. I am excited about the future and talking with Coaches that may have a vision for their team that I can be a part of.
