My name is Paula-Marie Brown and I am in grade 10. I have always been an athletic individual—participating in a range of sporting disciplines since I could walk: swimming, dance, Shotokan karate, gymnastics, track and field. Track and field is the only one of these sporting disciplines that I have continued to pursue until this point in time. I have been doing track and field since grade 5, in my native country of Jamaica. Since grade 8, my main events have been the high jump and the long jump. Both events require great technique in order to reap an excellent height or distance. Although my technique may not be perfect, I strive for it to be. I constantly make an effort to look for different ways in which I can improve, whether it be in terms of academics or athletics. I am very hardworking and I heed instructions very well. Not only do I want to make myself proud during competition, I also aspire to make my coaches proud as well as contribute greatly to whichever team I represent.
Academics are also an important aspect of my life. Since the start of my high school journey (from grade 7 in Jamaica), while practicing and competing in track and field competitively, I have managed to maintain an average of over 90%, a GPA ranging from 3.96-4.0, and the rank of 1 in my class from grades 7-9.
Upon moving to the United States in July of 2019, I expected to transition well into the 2019-2020 spring track season, but my plans have been brought to a halt due to present circumstances. My junior year, I aspire to set some new personal bests in my events as well as maintain excellent grades. I hope that my balance in terms of athletic extra curricular activity and academics will help make me an appealing candidate for prospective college teams.
